Recognizing the strong link between health and learning, OAISD health and wellness consultation and related support services aim to support schools in the implementation of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) Model including supporting a nationally recognized comprehensive PreK-12 health education curriculum, student health behavior data and analysis, assessment of the school health environment to support the whole child, and adequate access to health services including behavioral health.

April 11, 2024 from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Kent ISD

In collaboration with Kent ISD, Ottawa Area ISD is offering this training to help school personnel and administrators, understand, assess, and improve school climate and safety for all youth, especially those who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or questioning.

There are only two trainings in the state this year. Don't miss out.

The OAISD will be collaborating with the Ottawa Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition for a 1/2 day training on emerging drug trends among youth in our community.

The Connecting with Kids through School Health Conference focuses on the Whole Child. The conference theme encompasses leadership, partnership, strategies and programs that support student well-being.

Conference Audience: Administrators, teachers, counselors, social workers, nurses, intervention specialists, school-based health center staff, prevention workers, nutrition educators, school health coordinators, and anyone interested in supporting healthy students.

Senate Bill 66, approved by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on July 11, will require all public school districts and charter schools as well as intermediate school districts to provide age-appropriate material explaining what constitutes sexual assault and harassment to sixth through 12th graders. The material must also include explanations of consent — defined as an agreement to participate in sexual activities — and let students know that sexual violence is not the victim’s fault. The information must also list resources available to survivors and the actions they can take.

MDE has until June of 2024 to develop the material in consultation with experts and advocates. - Bridge Michigan

Prime For Life is a free, evidence-based program for youth who may be participating in high-risk behaviors including drug, alcohol, and vaping use. The program provides a judgment-free way of understanding how alcohol and drug-related problems

develop, what we can do to prevent them, and why sometimes we need help. Check out the Prime for Life Flyer for more information.

MMH Portal

• MMH continues to evolve to meet the online needs of its health education partners. The MMH portal is a one stop shop for all of our partners with a new landing page and links to the digital curriculum for current users and easy to navigate resources.

Beginning on February 8, 2024, all teachers who have been trained in Michigan Model for Health and currently have a 4th & 5th grade license will be receiving access to both the regular curriculum and the HIV/STI prevention lesson at 4th grade. These have been combined into one license for ease of use by the Michigan Model site managers.

Please note: Unless you have attended the HIV/STI prevention training required by the state of Michigan to teach the HIV/STI prevention content, do not teach this lesson! There are many reminders and warnings about this within the curriculum. If you have any questions, please reach out to me at ssills@oaisd.org.
