2025 College Captains
I am pleased to introduce our College Captains for 2025: Jada Halls and Cody Irwin. I would also like to congratulate Kirsty Fernandes who has been appointed as our College Prefect for Ministry and Mission, and Claire Small will serve as our Prefect of Learning and Wellbeing. These students will be formally recognised at the Year 12 Farewell Assembly. We are confident they will be excellent leaders and role models for the year ahead.
Year 11 Examinations
I want to extend my best wishes to our Year 11 students who have embarked on their final preliminary examinations. These tests mark a significant milestone in their academic journey, and I have no doubt that their dedication, hard work, and resilience will shine through. It is a time for them to showcase the knowledge and skills they have acquired over the past year. Please encourage them to stay focused, manage their time wisely, and most importantly, believe in themselves. Our dedicated teaching staff are here to support and guide them every step of the way.
Wishing Year 12 the Best
As we celebrate Year 11's start of exams we also want to turn our attention to our Year 12 students. These remarkable young adults are now just two weeks away from completing their high school journey. The final stretch can be challenging, but it's also a time for reflection, growth, and a celebration of all that they've accomplished so far. I want to extend my best wishes to our Year 12 students, their parents, and their teachers as they embark on this crucial period of preparation for their final examinations. It is a time to stay focused, remain calm, and draw upon the knowledge and skills they've acquired over the years. The entire school community stands behind you, and we have every confidence in your abilities.
It fills me with immense pride to witness the dedication and determination of our students and the support they receive from their families and the wider school community. Together, we create an environment where each student can thrive and reach their full potential.
Thank you for your continued support, and may the upcoming weeks be filled with success, joy, and lasting memories.
Father's Day Video
Thank you again to all the Fathers and Carers who came to the breakfast. Please see below a short video from the event. Thanks again to the P&F for their support. Click on the below purple text to see the video.
R U OK? Day
Thank you to all staff for their involvement in the R U OK? Day Staff Video. If you haven't seen it yet jump onto either our Facebook or Instagram page. We are blessed to have so many amazing staff members in our community. As we acknowledge R U OK? Day we pray that we may be able to slow down enough so that we can be attentive to those around us and to ourselves. And that as we navigate our emotional lives, we feel a sense of God’s constant and compassionate presence.
"As we gradually move through the painful parts of darkness and find restored peace of mind and heart, we learn anew how to lean on the Compassionate One, whose tender embrace sustains and strengthens us, even when we do not sense this presence."
Joyce Rupp
Kind regards,
Michael Turner
As we move into the final two weeks of the Term, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all students and parents for their support of the College. We have had a range of events and activities which were wonderful examples of what we can achieve as a community.
Week 10 is another example of what we can do to celebrate our students. In Week 10, we have the Year 12 farewell activities, assembly, Mass and awards. These allow us to honour those who are leaving and to wish them well for their exams. There may be some disruption to the College on the Tuesday and Wednesday and we thank our parents and students for their understanding.
Uniform
As we are still in winter uniform, students are required to adhere to the uniform guidelines. If there is a warm afternoon, students may leave in neat uniforms without blazers, however they would still be a requirement in the morning. Sports uniform is also to only be worn on Tuesdays and when a class has a practical PDHPE lesson scheduled. The College will also assess any extreme weather in the days prior and inform the community of any changes if necessary.
Arrival to school
Can I please remind families that the warning bell sounds each morning at 8:05am. All students should be on site by this time in order to get to class on time. It is imperative that students learn and engage for the entire school day and that they are in each lesson for the full hour in order to maximise their learning.
R U OK?
Thank you to all staff and students involved in R U OK? Day on Thursday. It is a great reminder of the power of asking questions and feeling free to answer them. Students are reminded of the role of their STRIVE Coach as well as Year Coordinators in ensuring they approach the relevant teacher and let them know if they are not ok. Our STRIVE program and pastoral structures at the school give each and every student access to a wide range of supports if and when they need them.

Social Justice Statement - SEE, JUDGE and ACT Workshop
Friday 6 September 2024
The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference releases a Social Justice Statement every year regarding an issue within our society and explores our collective and personal response to it. The Statement theme for 2024-25 is Truth and Peace: A Gospel Word in a Violent World. Our Diocese has a rich tradition of celebrating the release of this document by gathering as a small group of secondary students and teachers to unpack the Statement.
"Truth and Peace: A Gospel Word in a Violent World" is a comprehensive call to action for Catholics and all people of goodwill to engage in peace building through truth-telling, dialogue, and practical initiatives. It frames peace as a realistic and attainable goal, grounded in the teachings of the Gospel and the example of Jesus Christ. By addressing both global and local conflicts, the statement encourages a collective effort towards a peaceful world, rooted in the values espoused by the Catholic faith.
Bailey:
The day consisted of learning about the new Social Justice statement of 2024/2025 where we got together with many other schools doing activities based on the statement 'Truth and Peace, a gospel word in a violent world'. A stand out activity of the day was 'drumming for peace' where the group formed a circle and played beats together using a djembe - this enabled us to learn and understand the importance of listening as well as understanding one another which is important in attaining peace.
Leonardo:
The Social Justice Statement Workshop left me with a broader understanding of the detrimental conditions people across the world face today. We united in prayer, drummed for peace, and unpacked and discussed with students from other schools the new Social Justice Statement for 2024-25. Overall, the day was a really unique and enjoyable experience that will certainly remain with me.
R U OK? Day Reflection
R U OK? Day reminds us that mental health matters, and that a simple, caring conversation can make a world of difference in someone's life.
In a society that often celebrates independence and strength, it’s crucial to remember that asking for help is a sign of wisdom, not weakness.
Jesus taught us to love our neighbours as ourselves, which calls us to be present for one another, to listen, and to offer support when someone may be struggling.
When we open our hearts and show genuine care, we fulfill this calling, becoming the hands and feet of Christ in the world.
As we ask, "Are you okay?" today, let us listen with compassion, speak with kindness, and reach out with love. May our communities be places where everyone feels heard, supported, and valued.
Let us always remember that behind every smile could be a story of struggle.
Together, we can break the silence, offer hope, and share God's love.

Last Friday riders from our College Mountain Bike Club competed in the Illawarra Interschools MTB At Cringila Hill, Wollongong. Schools from all over the Illawarra and Wollongong areas descended on the Cringila Hills MTB park for a day of downhill and enduro mountain bike racing. The weather was perfect but warm and tested the endurance of all the young riders on the day.
All our competitors represented St Benedict's proudly and demonstrated true team spirit. Abbey O'Donnell held onto 3rd place in her division for most of the day but was knocked back to 4th in the last ten minutes of racing. Our MTB club would also like to congratulate Jack Drury from year 7 on his very first competitive race in this sport, well done.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the P&F for supporting our MTB club and we also send enormous gratitude to the parents who took time out of their day to bring their riders down to the event. We couldn't do it without you.
If you are interested in joining the Mountain Bike Club please speak to Mr O'Donnell.
Kind regards,
Mr O'Donnell
WINTER FEST
A heartfelt thank you to all the staff and the 150 students who participated in Winter Fest 2024! The afternoon was a great success as we raised much-needed funds for St Vincent de Paul through our festive, Christmas-themed market. The event featured an array of student-run stalls offering hot chocolates, delicious treats, books, bric-a-brac, manoush, face painting, Christmas bracelets, games, and much more!
Adding to the festive spirit, we were entertained throughout the afternoon by talented students performing live music. A huge thank you to the SBCC community for their generous support of this wonderful and fun-filled initiative!
The school would like to thank United Cinemas Narellan and Narellan Town Centre for their generous donation in supporting Winterfest.
YEAR 12 WINTER SLEEP OUT
Year 12 recently participated in a Winter Sleep Out to raise awareness for those experiencing homelessness and uncertainty. Throughout the evening, students engaged in various activities aimed at fostering empathy and understanding. The experience culminated with a surprise early-morning aerobics session on the school oval at 6am, which Year 12 embraced with enthusiasm!
A special thank you to our College leadership team and the P&F team for their invaluable support in making this event possible. We are incredibly proud of our students for their dedication and compassion!

TAS - Year 11 Design and Technology
Well done to Year 11 Design and Technology for the quality of work demonstrated in their most recent task, an architectural landscaping project.
Students had to upgrade Curry Reserve at Elderslie by designing and making a scaled model for an outdoor sheltered area that connects locals with the Dharawl nation.
Students researched extensively and designed really thoughtful solutions for this space. Many students connected their design to nature by including native planting and murals of Dharawal nation symbols.
Year 11 Design need to be commended on the detail presented in their portfolio work, CAD drawings and final models.
I look forward to seeing what Year 11 students do for their Major Design Project which start in Term 4, 2024.
Kind regards,
Lorena Ghignone
Year 12 Industrial Technology Timber and Multimedia
Congratulations to the 2024 Year 12 Industrial Technology classes and their Major Work Projects. Students have worked extremely hard to produce high quality and professional looking products. Products made include short films, documentaries, magazines about fashion and skateboarding, a fire safety campaign, homelessness awareness campaign, various games, a breakfast table, cabinets, bedside table, a workbench, empire bench seat and a fish tank stand.
All work showed a range of skills that these students have developed over the HSC course, as well as a professional portfolio which documents their design process. Well done Year 12!
Miss Emma Pepper & Mr Matthew Andruschko
Year 12 Design and Technology
Congratulations to the 2024 Year 12 Design and Technology class and their Major Design Projects. Students should be very proud of the quality and presentation of their final design solutions which ranged from a fall arrest system for the construction industry, dairy free dessert range, wellbeing and study centre design for Oran Park, a Russian cafe design, an outdoor school furniture product, multifunctional storage box, modular keyboard, fast fashion graphic design promotion and an affordable and healthy muesli bar.
Portfolio work was also highly detailed and professionally presented with students also submitting 6 minute videos and prototypes and models from the design process with their works.Well done Year 12!
Kind regards,
Lorena Ghignone
Teacher of the Week
Elise is a living embodiment of practising what you preach. She is actively involved in the school community and loves being a role model. Her can-do attitude is inspiring and motivates the students to have a go. You will find Elise hiking for the Duke of Edinburgh Award, competing in a staff vs. student race or discussing fitness goals. We appreciate the living example of the power of physical activity and the importance of prioritising health.
Our next teacher is one that has been here from the beginning. This teacher's influence and impact is untold. Our faculty is not what it is today without this teacher's hard work, dedication and creativity. Her knowledge and understanding of students make real learning happen. The countless lessons given by this teacher continue to inspire and guide students well beyond their time at school.
First Aid
In PDHPE, we strive to offer experiences with real-life applications, and this term has been particularly impactful. Students from SLR, EEC, and PDHPE recently participated in a Senior First Aid course. Delivered by external instructors, this course not only equipped students with crucial life-saving skills but also provided them with a formal Senior First Aid qualification recognised across the workforce.
The course was conducted by The Vital First Aid instructors, who are highly qualified paramedic trainers with extensive professional experience. Students engaged in hands-on practice of CPR techniques for adults, children, and infants. Learned to follow AED instructions, and were trained in procedures for managing bleeding, burns, fractures, anaphylaxis, asthma, and much more.
This invaluable experience has greatly enhanced our students' knowledge and readiness for the real world.

Head of PDHPE
On Thursday 5 September, Mr Turner, Mr Wheeler and Mr Morris were invited to attend the 2024 Bishop Student’s Excellence Awards held at the catholic Education Offices in Wollongong. The awards night is intended to celebrate some of the magnificent Year 12 students from across the Diocese. Students were awarded a certificate from Bishop Mascord.
This year's St Benedict’s nominee was Lara Caridi. Lara’s contribution to not only the life of the College but many other community areas is nothing short of astounding. Her receiving of the award is well-deserved and should be recognised and celebrated. Well done Lara.
2024 School Leaders Mass and Luncheon
On Tuesday September 10, the College Year 12 Leaders were invited by Bishop Brian Mascord to attend the annual School Leaders Mass and Luncheon held at the Xavier Cathedral Wollongong. The annual event is a chance for student leaders from all of the secondary schools across the Diocese to celebrate Mass one last time and listen to some thoughtful and encouraging words from Bishop Brian.
The day provided time for the College leaders: Grace Clarke, Joseph Christl and Christopher Foti, to reconnect with other leaders with whom they have spent some time at retreats and working on cross-Diocese events.
Kind regards,
Peter Morris

MISA Results
Year 10 - 12 Boys AFL
Match Report:
Great team performance from the boys in the AFL grand final against Oran Park Anglican College. Coming off the back of a loss against this team during the regular season, the team was prepared and determined for this match. A strong first quarter led by Ethan Clugston, Brodie Booth and Koby Raetz put us out to a commanding lead 30-1. This was backed up by another solid second quarter finishing the half at 45-8. Although OPAC scored a few late goals to make the score line respectable, they were no match for us finishing the game with a dominant 58-28 win. A big thank you to the whole team for their contribution throughout the entire season, in particular the Year 11’s who played during their preliminary exam period.
Best & Fairest - Ethan Clugston

U15s Boys Rugby League
Season Report:
This year, the U15s MISA Boys Rugby League team stormed through the competition to emerge as the deserved champions. This season, the boys did more than just win. They dominated, playing with a level of skill, grit, and teamwork.
From the first training session to the very end, they built a culture of camaraderie and mateship that translated into exceptional teamwork on the field. As a team they united and grew in stature. With each game they began to get stronger and by the end became the strongest team in the competition. These champions finished being the best in the competition, a testament to their hard work and perseverance.
Some honourable mentions go out to our captain, Antonio Bagala, who led by example every step of the way. Antonio was a force to be reckoned with on the field, driving the team forward with his relentless defence and tough carries, that helped us out of trouble. Another was, Jordy Collins, our leading try scorer, Jordy’s knack for turning the slightest opening into a scoring opportunity made him a constant threat and along with his halves partner Bailey Conte were pivotal in directing our boys to each victory. Lastly, the Players' Player Dylan Patton. Through his fearless tackles, tireless work rate, and unwavering support for his teammates made him the glue that held the team together.
What a season it was! But no season would be complete without a special shoutout to Mr. Turner, who was always there to offer a word of advice and together with Mr Ripepi allowed the boys to reach their full potential in becoming the overall champions.
Congratulations to the U/15’s MISA Boys Rugby League team for a season that will be remembered for years to come. You've shown what can be achieved when skill, hard work, and true team spirit come together. Here’s to the boys who played with heart and to the mateship that made it all possible.

Mr Ripepi
Year 10 - 12 Girls AFL
The girls finished up in 2nd place in the MISA competition, losing the final to Broughton Anglican College. Making it to the final was a significant achievement, because for many of the girls, it was their first time ever playing AFL. Shout outs go to Kai and Alyssa from year 11 who still played the final, despite it being their preliminary exam period. These two girls helped to dominate the midfield throughout the competition and through to the very end. Another shoutout goes to Emily whose fast movement in the forwards allowed us many opportunities to score goals. A notable moment in the final was a goal scored by Sharnie from half-way down the field. A special thanks to our umpire Ronan who attended each week and confidently ran the game, teaching the rules to the girls as he went. I am very proud of the growth and resilience shown by the girls on the team and I wish them all the best if they play again next year!

Real Numbers and RUTAC
Real Numbers - a concept that covers rational numbers like positive and negative integers, fractions, and irrational numbers. In other words, any number that we can think of, except complex numbers, is a real number. This is one area we have seen a drop in for our Year 9 2024 cohort according to NAPLAN data. So how do we improve this?
One strategy that has been adopted within the whole school is RUTAC.
RUTAC is a process that involves reading questions, underlining key words, thinking about the question, answering it and possibly checking your answers. Does it make sense? When we look at real numbers, we often use them in the context of worded problems in multiple subject areas (not just Mathematics!)
If we can get students to think of real life applications when using real numbers, then it makes more sense to them. Where do we see fractions, decimals and percentages in real life? Can this be incorporated in our everyday conversations with each other? Perhaps the grocery bills have gone up, perhaps there are a few specials at the local store?
I challenge YOU as a family to bring the language of fractions, decimals and percentages at home. I challenge YOU to ask your children - what is RUTAC? Where are you learning about it in class? Talk about discounts (whether it is percentage based or fractions based), talk about increases.
Let’s see the language of real numbers and RUTAC used at home as well as in our classrooms in an effort to improve student understanding of real numbers in real contexts!
Kind regards

Year 9 Fast Forward Day
On September 4, 2024, a group of Year 9 students participated in the "Fast Forward" program at Western Sydney University. This initiative aims to inspire and motivate students by giving them a glimpse of university life and introducing them to a variety of academic pathways. Throughout the day, students engaged in workshops, interactive activities, and informative sessions to expand their understanding of potential future careers.
"Emma Wood"- At the "Fast Forward" program, my peers and I participated in various fun activities. To start, we played a few icebreaker games to get comfortable with students from other schools. The theme for the day was ‘Rise to the Challenge,’ and one of the first activities we engaged in taught us about transferable skills, including soft and hard skills. We learned how identifying our strengths and weaknesses can guide us in selecting potential career paths. Several of us participated in problem-solving activities, applying these skills in various situations.
The second activity was a campus-wide mystery, where we had to use critical thinking to solve a fictional robbery. Through multiple problem-solving tasks, we gathered clues and eventually identified the correct culprit. Overall, the day was both educational and engaging, helping us recognise our skills and how they can influence our future study and career choices. The event encouraged communication, teamwork, and analytical thinking, making it a memorable experience for all.
A winner for the Collarts' School of Design Creative Futures Competition!
Lucas has been awarded 1st Prize winning an iPad Pro and Stylus. A huge congratulations to him!
The Collarts School of Design invited budding young creatives in High School Years 10, 11 and 12 to enter their new annual design competition, with the chance to win prizes that would help them make their creative dream a reality.
Their creative ideas could relate to improving products or interior spaces, textiles, fashion and clothing or they could create photography, animation or graphic design — anything that encompasses this year's theme:
"Inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, designers and creatives are applying their thinking to issues such as reducing inequality, promoting health and well-being and solutions for more responsible production and consumption of products through circular design.
Candidates were asked to submit a design that helps envision the future we want to live in and design for a more equitable, accessible and sustainable world".
