IHMS Weekly Recap
It’s been a fantastic week to be a Knight!
Eighth-grade students had the opportunity to visit the CAA and explore Signature Programs available to them in high school. The SME Business Department also visited to share information about business courses for our future high schoolers. And, our Girls Basketball team remains undefeated—way to go, Knights!

Thank you so much for your partnership over the last few weeks with MAP Testing! As a school we reached our ELA MAP Growth goal of 53% of students hitting growth. This is amazing! Math MAP was also a success! We appreciate your support in building the testing culture here at IHMS.
A reminder that we will be completing the iReady Diagnostic in Math classes in January. Please let Mrs. Gorniak know if you have any questions!

7th Grade: Understanding Emotions - Session 9
This is the 1st of 3 sessions focused on understanding and regulating emotions. This understanding can provide us with valuable perspectives on bot
8th Grade: Connecting Your Future & This Year (Planning Ahead) - Session 9
This is the 4th of 4 sessions where we look ahead and plan for our futures. In this session we continue thinking about high school, what we hope for, obstacles we might face to achieving those wishes, and ways we might overcome those obstacles.
Inclement Weather Procedures Update
Winter weather is here and we want to be sure families are as ready as possible for possible schedule changes or inclement weather cancellations. As of December 5, 2024, the Shawnee Mission School District has updated its inclement weather plans to include Plan C- which includes a 2-hour delay option. This new option aligns us with our neighboring districts in Johnson County and will facilitate common decision-making with regard to inclement weather. Please review the district’s inclement weather procedures on this website: https://www.smsd.org/families/weather
This webpage also includes information about how you can be informed about any inclement weather announcements from the Shawnee Mission School District.
Attendance Tips
Tis The Season!!
We understand attending regularly during the winter months can be hard (i.e. illness), but it is important to partner with the school and keep the lines of communication open.
Here’s a few tips:
Check-in with your teachers regularly
Reach out to your school counselor and/or grade level principal
Touch base with our Attendance Specialist – tabithastout@smsd.org
Cell Phones
IHMS students focus on developing habits that will set them up for success now and in the future. One habit that can be difficult to master is maintaining a healthy relationship with a cell phone or any other device. Students have done a fantastic job keeping cell phones out of the learning environment so far this school year! However, the job is not complete. We must continue to support our students as they develop healthy habits for lifelong success. Protecting the learning environment and maximizing our time at school is of utmost importance to all of us at Indian Hills.
It’s not easy, but it’s worth it!
