Good Morning Afternoon Woodbury Middle School,
After a long winter with short days, daylight saving time has arrived. While the longer evenings are enjoyable, the dark commute to school can be less pleasant. This morning, the effects of this change were noticeable among both students and staff upon arrival. What are your thoughts? Please take a moment to participate in the poll below.
It's also that time of year when I ask all families to review the dress code with their students. The dress code is outlined in our student handbook as follows:
Student dress may be regulated, and students are encouraged to dress in clothing appropriate to the school situation. Restrictions on freedom of expression may be applied whenever the mode of dress is unsafe, disruptive, or contrary to law.
Any school dress that impairs safety or increases the risk of injury to self or others, causes discomfort to others (e.g., uncleanliness, malodorousness, inappropriate language), causes distraction or disruption of the learning environment, advertises or advocates the use of alcohol or drugs, pornography, or is libelous or inherently contains the unreasonable potential to upset and hurt others is prohibited. Sneakers or rubber-soled shoes are required for outdoor play and PE classes. Students may bring in a pair of sneakers on their assigned PE day. When questions arise regarding the appropriateness of attire, they are to be brought to the attention of the designated administrator. The administrator will use his or her professional discretion to address such concerns.
What does this all mean? In short, we believe that clothing should be appropriate for the school setting. Often, students wear outfits that are more suitable for the gym or the beach rather than for school. No one enjoys having the uncomfortable conversation about being “dress-coded.”
We ask that you discuss this with your students to ensure they understand the expectations. Students should not wear shirts or shorts that are too short or that expose bare skin or undergarments to school. Students may be asked to be picked up if clothing is not appropriate for school. We appreciate your cooperation in guiding students' clothing choices before they make any purchases for the remainder of the school year that may not align with these guidelines.
Our Parents in the Middle (PIM) is asking for your support for this year's March Madness activity night. They are looking for food donations for the evening events scheduled on March 27th from 5-7 pm. Please click here to help with donations. PIM and the WMS Alliance team thank you for your support.
Mrs. Oppici, our school nurse, will begin scoliosis evaluations for 7th-grade girls and 8th-grade boys on March 24th. Evaluations will take place during Unified Arts classes. Students who have an updated physical from this school year will be exempt from the screening.
Please click the following letter from Alliance regarding Earth Day activity at WMS.
Spring sports are approaching; please register your student by clicking this link. Students who have not registered will not be allowed to try out for teams.
Please see the flyer below for information about our food drive, which will take place from March 11th to March 27th. For each item of food donated, students will receive one raffle ticket. The winning Raffle ticket will be drawn during March Madness for a chance to win a prize valued at $100.
Have a great week!

Please make sure to review the Woodbury Middle School Student Handbook with your student regarding cell phones. Some of you may be aware that the state has issued recommendations on cell phone usage in schools. I have included the proposed language from the state below. Click the picture to access the entire document from the state.
• Middle School − The policy for middle school students should also focus on removing cell phones from the school day or classroom. Developmentally, this age group is particularly vulnerable to the negative effects of excessive personal technology use and has a difficult time controlling their impulses. Concurrently, middle school students experience increased autonomy and independence during the school day, which can lead to increased opportunity for cell phone misuse. − Possession of cell phones in this age group is likely to be viewed as a rite of passage into adulthood, so communication and application of policies that restrict use must be developed in consideration of the specific challenges of middle school students.
