COUNSELOR'S CORNER
I loved meeting all of our new first graders during their first counseling lesson of the year, and cannot wait to get to know them more! We read The Rabbit Listened by Cori Doerrfeld - a sweet story that draws parallels to the role of a School Counselor.
In second through fifth grade we are learning what it means to be a Bucket Filler, as a reminder to treat others with kindness and respect as we begin a new school year. Second and third graders listened to the book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? By Carol McCloud, and fourth and fifth graders followed along with How Full Is Your Bucket? By Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer before completing an activity to go with the read aloud!
MENTAL HEALTH MONTHLY
Welcome Back, Stonehurst! My name is Mrs. Sanders and I am the School Social Worker at Stonehurst. This is the Mental Health Monthly section of the newsletter. The goal of the section is to reduce the stigma associated with mental health and provide quick tips, information, and resources related to mental and behavioral health. I look forward to promoting and supporting the mental health of the Stonehurst community. Please remember that this content is for informational purposes only and she should not be considered a substitute for professional advice or consultation with mental health professionals. If you need help finding mental health professionals in your community, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. This month’s topic is ADHD.
NURSE'S NEWS
Stonehurst Hills cares about our students’ health needs!
Medications: If your child needs ANY medication at school, whether prescription or over the counter, there is a form that has to be filled out BEFORE we can administer that medication at school. Students are not permitted to carry medication on them without a doctor’s order. This includes over the counter medications such as Tylenol, Motrin, Cold medicine, etc.
Alerting to Medical Needs: Please make sure you are promptly informing the school nurse of any of your child’s medical needs, especially if they require accommodations during the school day.
Allergies: If your child has an allergy it is important the nurse is aware of what the allergy is and the type of reaction your child has experienced in the past. If they have an EpiPen at home for emergencies, they should have one at school as well.
Asthma: If your child has a rescue inhaler at home, one should also be kept at school in the event of an emergency.
Chronic Health Conditions: Please inform the nurse if your child has any chronic health conditions, including but not limited to: seizures, diabetes, heart conditions, physical disabilities, asthma, or allergies. Please bring in or have your child’s doctor send over information/orders to the school of how we should manage your child’s condition. We can also set up a care conference at school to assure we are giving your child the best care and prepared for any emergencies that arise.
Please do not hesitate to contact the nurse’s office with any questions or concerns. I can also assist with finding local health care facilities for both insured and uninsured families!

News from the Art Room
In our first week of Art, students were introduced to Ms. Connell and played a logo guessing game. Students learned that logos are forms of art and that art can be more than a drawing or painting. Everyone recognized so many logos and understood that art is everywhere. Additionally, students have started their self portraits inspired by artist Rene Magritte. Magritte was a belgian artist famous for his surrealist paintings, especially his self portrait with an apple in front of his face. Students will be drawing one of their favorite things in front of their face for their self portraits.
Physical Education News
Hello Stonehurst superstars:
To start this year in physical education, students learned all the rules and routines of the gym, and then moved onto playing games to focus on teamwork and moving safely in personal space. For health students learned about germs and how to properly wash our hands by playing germ ball. We will then move into a physical fitness unit so our students can understand the power of their own body.
The Mr. B. beard challenge has just gotten underway. For this first challenge classes will earn a point if their whole class comes prepared for PE. To be fully prepared and to be able to participate in physical activity students must come with sneakers and clothing they can easily move around and get sweaty in. In November, the class with the most points will be able to design how Mr. B. will have to cut his hair and beard. I will then spend a day at school rocking whatever look they gave me. Please help your child by making sure they are coming to school with sneakers on their PE day.
