Eye on FISD
February 7, 2025
From Dr. Gilstrap
I am very proud of all of our students who participated in the Wilson County Junior Livestock Show. Our students have been very successful, showing great character and confidence. I’m looking forward to the rest of the stock show season, knowing they will continue to accomplish great things.
As you may already know, our Board of Trustees approved parameters earlier this week that will allow us to develop a hybrid 4-day calendar for the 2025-2026 school year. We continue to work on calendar options, and a final calendar will be presented to our board members for approval next month.
The board also approved placing a $95 million bond program on the May 3, 2025 election ballot. We will soon be sharing more information about the proposed projects with our families and community. In the meantime, district administrators and I will be available to answer questions. Major components of the bond include:
- District-Wide Safety, Security, Technology & Maintenance – Improvements at all campuses, including but not limited to fencing, guard stations, entryways, enclosed vestibules, security cameras, fire alarms, HVAC, roofing, communications systems, and critical infrastructure.
- New Intermediate Campus – New campus to house students in grades 5th and 6th, alleviating overcrowding at the elementary schools and middle school, with the opportunity for a future expansion to a middle school.
- CTE Additions at High School & Middle School, Middle School Weight Room Additions – Additions and renovations for CTE and weight rooms, enhancing learning environments.
I want to thank our trustees, staff, parents, and community members for working together throughout this process. This bond program reflects our commitment to keep our schools safe and secure, address critical needs, and provide the best learning opportunities for our students.
If you’d like to know more about these agenda items, the board meeting video is included at the end of this newsletter.
"Dangerous Teen Trends" Presentation
FISD will host a Parent & Family Engagement Workshop in the FMS Cafeteria from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12, titled "Dangerous Teen Trends." The session will aim to provide parents with insights into prevalent risks, including vaping, fentanyl abuse, human trafficking and social media pitfalls. By understanding these trends and their implications, parents can better equip themselves to support and safeguard the adolescents in their lives. Be on the lookout for more information in the coming weeks.
