Calendar for the Week
Filipino American History Month
Filipino American History Month (FAHM) is celebrated in October to honor the contributions and achievements of Filipino Americans. It also marks the first recorded arrival of Filipinos in the United States on October 18, 1587, when they landed in Morro Bay, California aboard the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Esperanza. As the second-largest Asian American group in the U.S. and the second-largest ethnic group in California, Filipino Americans play a significant role in the nation's history and culture.
Filipino American Icon - Peter Gene Hernandez
Peter Gene Hernandez, known professionally as Bruno Mars, was born on October 8, 1985. An American singer-songwriter, Mars is renowned for his dynamic stage performances, retro showmanship, and versatility across various musical genres, including pop, R&B, funk, soul, reggae, disco, and rock. He is supported by his band, the Hooligans, who also serve as backup singers and dancers. In 2021, Mars teamed up with Anderson .Paak to form the musical superduo Silk Sonic.
October is LGBT History Month
This month-long observance celebrates the invaluable contributions of the LGBTQ community. Established in 1994 by Rodney Wilson, history teacher, the month serves to provide role models, build community, and affirm the civil rights of LGBTQ individuals. In 2009, President Barack Obama officially declared it a national history month. The celebration aligns with National Coming Out Day on October 11 and honors the historic marches on Washington for LGBTQ rights in 1979 and 1987.
Breast Cancer Awareness
In 2024 more than 360,000 people were diagnosed with breast cancer. But there is hope. Advancements in early detection methods and support continue to increase the changes of survival. When caught in it's earliest , localized stages, the 5 -year relative survival rate of breast cancer is 99%. - The National Breast Cancer Foundation.

IB History 2 Classes Visit Several Smithsonian Institution (SI) Museums
IB History 2 teachers, Mr. Mark Pim (Social Studies Resource Teacher) and Ms. Dorothy Lee, connected curriculum to real-world experiences by engaging Springbrook scholars in an in-depth regional study of the challenges faced by Asia and Africa from the mid-17th to the mid-20th century. This study was enhanced through visits to the Asian and African Art Museums, followed by further explorations at the National Gallery of Art, allowing students to draw connections between historical events and cultural artifacts.
