Google Core vs Additional Services
What happened?
In December 2024, Superintendents across the state were notified that Google’s additional services (see list below) are not covered under the umbrella of Google’s Core services, and therefore not compliant with NYS Ed Law 2d. As of January 1st, 2025 Google’s additional services will be out of compliance with NYS Ed Law 2d. This is a directive from NYSED. VCS will discontinue these services on March 1st, 2025.
Why?
Google has firmly resisted complying with the regulations of NYS Ed Law 2d.
Who will be affected?
Students will not be able to use Google’s additional services. Students can still access and use Core Services.
What is EdLaw 2d?
NYS Ed Law 2d protects student data privacy by requiring schools and third-party vendors to follow strict security protocols. It ensures that vendors sign privacy agreements and gives parents the right to access their children's data.
What services are impacted? The following Google Additional Services will be not accessible for student use in VCS starting 3/1/2025:
Youtube
Google Translate
Google Takeout
Google Photos
Google Maps
Google News
Google Earth
Google Groups
Google Chrome sync
Google Bookmarks
Chrome Web Store
Google Core Services (will not be affected)
Google Drive
Google Docs
Google Slides
Google Classroom
Google Gemini
Google Calendar
Google Keep
Google Meet
Google Sites
Youtube Alternatives
VCS subscribes to several software companies that will allow teachers to embed youtube videos for students to watch. This is allowed because the embedded format does not collect Personally Identifiable Information (PII). These softwares include Padlet, Nearpod, Google Slides/Docs, and Edpuzzle. For more information click here or book an apt. With Eric or Nick, our two Technology Integration TOSAs.
Google Translate Alternatives
There are several work arounds to continue to use Google Translate without accessing Google Translate directly. Click here for more inforamtion.
