PRINCIPAL CORNER
Please be sure to take time daily, weekly, or as needed to discuss with your student(s) what he or she is learning in school. Studies show that questions like “Did you do your homework?” or “What did you learn today?” provide less of a response initially versus questions like “Who did you play with at recess today?” or “What was the funniest thing that happened today?” These questions will prompt conversation that will open up discussion about the aforementioned questions. Six out of ten students in grades K-5 when asked “What did you learn today?” answered “nothing” when asked this question first. When asked first about who they sat with at lunch and what were the other kids eating, nine out of ten students willingly shared something they learned during the day when prompted.
You will see in this issue a link to information regarding a vote on an upcoming half-cent sales tax in Orange County. Please review the resources and see how this vote will impact schools.

Curriculum and Testing Updates
This week, students in Grades 3 and 6 completed their FAST Reading and Math assessments. Second-grade students took their Star Reading and Math assessments, while our kindergarten and first-grade students continued with their Star assessments.
Grades 4 and 5 will take their first FAST assessments on Monday, September 9th, and Tuesday, September 10th. Please ensure your child gets a good night’s rest, has a healthy breakfast, and arrives on campus no later than 8:00 am. These assessments will evaluate students on their current grade-level standards in Reading and Math, and the results are for informational purposes only.
Students in Grades 3-6 can access their scores by following the directions in the “How to Access State Assessment Scores in Skyward Parent Portal” guide. Parents of students in Grades K-2 should sign up for email alerts via Renaissance. The State Assessment AOR will be sent home following the completion of FAST PM #1.
If you have any questions, please contact Cayce Carter at [Cayce.Carter@orlandoscience.org]Cayce.Carter@orlandoscience.org.

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Rodriguez
What an amazing week it has been! Our students are working on identifying fragments and sentences as they practice handwriting and reading. In Social Studies we are learning what family is and how that is different for us all. In Science we are learning about the five senses and how to use them. Our class is super excited to see what we are going to learn in the following weeks to come!
Bradley
This week students have been working hard on their reading and writing skills! Students have been practicing identifying the letters and sounds, letter order, and correct letter and number formation. In science students have begun exploring the 5 senses. This week students used their sense of touch to discover what was in our mystery bags!
FIRST
Bayno
Ms. Bayno’s class is excited to share that our first four weeks of school have been filled with exciting learning adventures and practicing teamwork through group activities, which help students build friendships while learning together.
For Reading, we learned to identify the characters in the stories “Suki’s Kimono,” “I’m Me,” and “Big Dilly’s Tale.” We also practiced asking and answering questions about the story “Big Dilly’s Tale.”
For Math, we finished all the lessons for Topic 1 and completed the Topic Assessment. In this topic, we solved problems that involved comparing how many fewer objects are in one group than in another. We solved addition problems by finding a missing addend, thought out loud about how to restate addition problems to decide how to solve them, and wrote equations to represent and solve word problems involving putting together or taking apart.
For Science, we talked about the motions of objects, such as push or pull. We also completed a STEM challenge to build a flying machine to help Rosie Revere. We tested the machines by sending them down a zip line.
In Ms. DiNuzzo's class, Krish K. received his Xtra Math Addition certificate.
Also, add that 1st grade is in need of cereal boxes for our cereal box project due September 27th.
SECOND
Ben Rhoma
In second grade this week, we are learning how to activate our growth mindset when things get difficult. We are focused on being well rested, eating healthy, and doing our best on the FAST tests that we have Wednesday and Friday. The class is practicing reading aloud to each other using expression. In math, we are busy using fact patterns to complete equations and adding two numbers in different orders to get the same sum. Students are collaborating in Science and brainstorming ideas. Students are investigating, collecting evidence, and making claims. They love it! Although it is a short week, we are accomplishing many things!
THIRD
Myers
We have been busy in third with FAST and IXL testing, but we still managed to have fun learning too. Students are working on matter in science and have been busy determining the mass of various objects with a pan balance. They have also been measuring the volume of irregular shaped objects with water and graduated cylinders.
In ELA, they worked on their speaking skills while presenting 5 objects about themselves to their peers. So many great speaking voices and students really enjoyed learning interesting facts about each other.
In social studies, we have been studying the Government and important landmarks in America. We are doing this in a classroom simulation form and students are building their own classroom government. To compliment the lesson, students made their own landmarks to represent things that are important to their classroom community. (Books, scary caterpillars invasions, and play ground equipment were at the top of the list.)
FOURTH
Gallano
It's great to have students who are actively participating in class discussions this past few weeks! Thier active engagement led to their deeper understanding and a more dynamic learning environment. They are all encouraging each other's participation that fosters their critical thinking and collaboration among students.
FIFTH
Bennett
Hello OSS families!
5th grade Accelerated Math and Science has had an exciting week. We have begun Multiplying and Dividing Fractions and Decimals using Algorithms. Please ask your students about Kentucky Ckicken Fried (KCF) . . . it gives them a good chuckle! Science is getting interesting as we start States of Matter. I have overheard wonderful discussions of what counts as matter and defining our key vocabulary. Thursday was our second lab centering around marbles, water displacement, and Solids. Keep up the good work 5th grade!

SPECIALS
Mr. Senter Physical Education
This week students were in the field and were able to play a combined game of I want a home and Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Cone. I want a home is a spatial awareness game involving locomotor movement and encourages students to check their surroundings before moving. Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Cone is a game that promotes following directions, good sportsmanship, and allows students to work on reaction time.
SIXTH
Our Spanish classes worked on a Spanish Speaking country map last week. Students will get a random SSC to do research about next week. They will have the first assessment on 9/13 about ABC’s and numbers.
Embark on an unforgettable adventure to Costa Rica in 2025! This amazing opportunity, though not school-sponsored, offers students a unique chance to dive deep into Spanish immersion and explore the wonders of science and STEM in one of the most biodiverse countries in the world.
