Message from the Superintendent
May 3, 2024
Dear North Middle School Community:
I am writing to share some background about changes at Martinsburg North Middle School pending the complete findings/recommendations of the West Virginia Department of Education’s report and West Virginia Board of Education actions on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, related to the school's recent Comprehensive Support & Improvement review.
As part of its obligation to provide all of the students in West Virginia with a thorough and efficient public education, the State Department closely monitors all West Virginia schools. They have raised concerns over low achievement at North Middle for the last couple of years and previously designated it as a school needing Comprehensive Support and Improvement. We anticipate that additional action will be taken to address these concerns. If so, the State will provide a corrective action plan and will continue to provide guidance and support for our students and staff. Some recommendations require immediate action and others will take longer to implement. Regardless, Berkeley County Schools will continue to work collaboratively with the West Virginia Department of Education to correct the deficiencies identified and maintain educational integrity and academic achievement at North Middle School.
Effective Wednesday, May 1, Holly Kleppner, Executive Director, Department of Secondary Leadership, stepped in as lead administrator of the school. Ms. Kleppner, along with the other administrators, is fully committed to ensuring a meaningful finish to the school year despite the challenges we are faced with. North Middle School has a team of outstanding instructors with a common goal of helping students achieve success in the classroom.
We put students first in everything we do and are committed to providing a safe and healthy environment where students can learn. We want all of our students to achieve and to do that, need the support of our schools, our parents, and our community.
As always, please reach out with any additional questions or concerns. Thank you for your continued support.
