Jackie Robinson Academy Weekly Newsletter 2/10/24
Dear JROB Families!
Developing coping skills is one of the best things that we can give our children. The thing is, coping skills isn’t something that can be just be given. Children learn how to cope by struggling and learning to persevere through hard times. They learn how to cope by failing and recovering from failure. It almost seems counter intuitive because as parents we all have that protective instinct. We want to provide everything for our kids that perhaps we didn’t have growing up. We want to keep them safe and shelter them from pain or hardship. Consequently, without opportunities to struggle, we are finding a growing number of students who are unsure of their own abilities, who cannot independently problem-solve, and who lack the resilience needed for life’s unforeseen circumstances.
So as we head into testing season, think about the balance between support and struggle. Consider giving opportunities for perseverance or even failure. Ask yourself how you’ve modeled making mistakes and recovering from them. By doing so, you will help you child develop the grit, resilience, and tenacity to overcome any obstacle that comes their way.
With Dolphin Pride,
Principal Ngo
