January Highlights and Important Updates
Happy February! As we step into a new month, I want to take a moment to reflect on the exciting events that made January such a memorable start to 2024.
Our school musical was a resounding success, showcasing the incredible talent and hard work of our student performers, crew, and directors. It was a joy to see our community come together to celebrate the arts and support our students’ creativity and dedication.
January also marked an important milestone for our sixth and seventh graders. Sixth-grade students began the exciting process of choosing a world language, an important step in their academic journey that will open doors to new cultures and opportunities. Meanwhile, our seventh graders made their course selections for high school, taking the next big step in planning their future academic paths.
We also had a special visit from Kai, the KE therapy dog, who brought smiles and comfort to our students and staff. It was a wonderful reminder of the positive impact that small moments of kindness and connection can have on our school community.
Additionally, we are thrilled to announce that our school newspaper was released this month! Entirely created by our talented students, the newspaper showcases their hard work, creativity, and dedication to sharing school news and stories with our community.
Looking ahead, February promises to be just as engaging and rewarding. We are excited to host parent-teacher conferences, which provide a valuable opportunity for families and teachers to connect and discuss student progress. Additionally, our winter break will offer everyone a chance to recharge and spend quality time with loved ones.
Thank you for your continued support as we work together to create a vibrant and thriving school environment for all our students.

Important Message about the NYS Assessments - We need your Support
As always, the New York State Assessments will take place this spring in three subject areas: math (Gr. 3-8), English language arts (Gr. 3-8), and science (Gr. 5 & 8). We are always seeking to improve at Franklin and one area we see room for improvement is test participation. Franklin historically has had a low test participation (and high test refusal). Maximizing our test participation will have a positive impact on our students and schools in several different ways.
I understand there are varying opinions regarding test participation but I would like to provide you with how we utilize these assessments to help your child and prepare them to succeed for the future and also provide you with the school and teacher perspective.
There are direct benefits for students choosing to take the NYS assessments as well. This formal testing experience is very similar to what students will encounter when they sit for the mandatory high school Regents Exams as well as the SAT and ACT exams, which can affect a student’s college options. Depending on what path students follow after graduation, this kind of formal testing is often something they face in future years as well such as the civil service exam or trade school assessment. Although students engage in routine assessments as part of the everyday instructional framework, that kind of formal testing experience isn’t replicated at any other time. For this reason, children might find themselves better prepared for success on later tests if they have taken the NYS Assessments.
We have seen major changes and improvements to the NYS Gr. 3-8 Assessments over the past few years. One concern regarding this testing was that it was originally tied to teacher evaluations, but this is no longer the case. Tests are no longer timed and the testing window was shortened from three days to two at the elementary level. Additionally, accommodations have been facilitated for students with disabilities.
These assessments also help teachers gauge the level of student understanding of the material and whether additional support or attention is needed. The NYS Assessments provide a deeper look into how student performance compares across all schools, not just here in our school but throughout the state. Our staff work extremely hard to understand and analyze data from assessment results to improve instruction and identify necessary supports for students. If many students do not participate in the assessments, it makes this data less reliable and we are not able to make as well-informed decisions.
Additionally, test participation impacts Franklin Middle’s accountability designation, which is how New York State rates us and our performance. It is also how the state determines whether any targeted support is needed. The NYS assessments are a significant factor when determining Franklin's accountability status, so it’s beneficial for assessment data to be as accurate as possible by maximizing participation.
It is our responsibility as educators to position students for success and to make sure we are providing the best possible instruction and support. Working to increase our test participation rate is a key component in working toward these objectives.
School Safety
I wanted to take a moment to provide an update regarding our OpenGate screening process and share some positive news about how well students have been adapting.
We are incredibly proud of how smoothly students have adjusted to the screenings. They have been demonstrating patience, responsibility, and an understanding of the importance of safety in our school community. Their efforts deserve recognition!
As we continue to prioritize safety, I'd like to inform you of a slight change in communication moving forward. While I will no longer send updates after every screening, please know that the frequency of screenings will increase for the remainder of the year to maintain a consistent and proactive approach.

Morning Drop-Off Safety Reminder:
As we enter the winter months and deal with challenging weather, I want to take a moment to remind everyone about the importance of following our morning drop-off procedures to ensure safety and efficiency for all.
When dropping off your child, please remember that our drop-off zone is a "drop-and-go" area. To help maintain a smooth traffic flow:
- Once your child exits the vehicle, please pull forward past the stop sign if you need to check your phone or take care of anything else.
- Avoid remaining parked in the drop-off lane, as it can cause traffic backups and unsafe conditions with cars needing to maneuver around stopped vehicles.
Your cooperation helps keep everyone safe and ensures that drop-off is a quick and stress-free experience for all families.
Thank you for helping us prioritize safety and make mornings easier for everyone. We appreciate your understanding and partnership!
