Game Night, Recalling Old Memories at Mills
Kindergarteners at Mills Elementary School showed off their game skills this past Tuesday in a Kindergarten Game Night.
Mills kindergarten teachers Elizabeth Campbell and Kayla Pershall helped families enjoy a night where children could show their parents what they have learned thus far in the school year, while sharing snacks and goodies together.
The night culminated with a chance to learn the renowned card game, Uno.
Campbell let the families know the deck of Uno they had received was theirs to take home to continue learning and playing the card game. The two kindergarten teachers spent time explaining the laundry list of rules the game entails.
The kindergarteners then applied what they had learned to a game of Uno with their parents and siblings, while undoubtedly, coming across wrong rules which have been passed down through generations.
Mills parents Merkey Shuey and Kristin Ferdik attended the game night for their son, Salylo. Shuey himself attended Mills when he was in elementary school.
Shuey was a Mustang during the mid-1990’s, and attended Mills from fourth grade until sixth. Ferdik also was a student at Mills during the early 2000’s.
Shuey still remembers his principal’s name at the time, along with his fourth grade and fifth grade teachers, one of his teachers being former educator, Mrs. Yazee. He even recalled being at Mills during the school’s renovation of its gymnasium.
“I do not want him (Salylo) to go to any other school because this is my school right here. My oldest sister, she went here, too,” Shuey said. “And he is my only son; we are still in the neighborhood, so I would rather him come here than any other school.”
Shuey even remembers Campbell, who was a teacher at Mills when he was a student. Campbell, a longtime kindergarten teacher of 25 years, said she recalled seeing an engraving Shuey left on one of the chairs in a classroom at Mills.
“I looked for the engraving but I could not find it, but I do remember it,” Campbell said. “I have parents who are now the grandparents bringing me their grand baby’s, and I have had some of my kindergarteners bring me their kids in school.”
