Bike and Hike to School Week Information NEW
We invite you to participate next week (Sept. 9-13) in a school and district-wide Hike & Bike to school event! This is the kickoff for our efforts, as parents, to increase walking and biking to school and, where possible, to assist one another in logistics, encouragement, and fun. (You may recall our Walk and Bike to school week last spring, which went great.)
- All are encourage to participate, and no RSVP is needed--just show up! Of course, there is no cost--participation is free and open to all Grant families.
- See the map below for walking/biking routes to school. Stars mark where a captain is committed to lead the walk and you can meet up with a group. (We welcome more volunteer captains!) Yard signs will be posted at meet up locations. The times listed on the map show the approximate time to depart and make it to school by 8:45 am from that point (which is also the departure time for meet up locations at the starts).
- We have a parents list of participants compiled to allow families to coordinate with one another. Let us know if you'd like to join this list and we can share it.
- Note that this is a parent-led activity, in which we each take responsibility. That said, both the Schools and the City of Lakewood are facilitating and providing traffic safety support.
Sincerely,
Tom Bullock, Kate Weaver, and Eileen Hailey

Allergies and Classroom Treats - Health Safety
Food allergies can be very serious but together we can manage them safely. Food allergy reactions are unpredictable. Even the smallest amount of a food allergen can cause a severe reaction. The only way to prevent a food allergy reaction is to avoid the problem food (allergen). All treats and snacks provided for a class must be store bought, individually packaged at purchase, and ingredients clearly listed (food label attached). Schools have the responsibility to protect the health and safety of all students. Treats that do not follow the above guidelines will be declined and will not be shared with students. For more guidelines about classroom treats, please refer to our family handbook. Thank you for your cooperation.

Attendance is KEY!
Ohio schools must report student absences as part of House Bill 410. Schools are required to develop Absence Intervention Plans for students who exceed absence limits outlined in the law. Families will receive auto generated letters as notifications from the district indicating the number of hours your child has missed in accordance with these laws. Absences exceeding 38 hours in a month, or 65 hours in a year will require medical documentation in order to be considered excused. Should you have an ongoing medical concern, please contact our office.
Excessive Absence is defined as (1) absent 38 or more hours in a month with or without an excuse or (2) absent 65 or more hours in a year with or without an excuse
Habitual Truancy is defined as (1) absent 30 or more consecutive hours without a legitimate excuse, (2) absent 42 or more hours in one month without a legitimate excuse, or (3) absent 72 or more hours in one year without a legitimate excuse.
*Hours also include total number of minutes tardy to school and early dismissal.
5th Grade Instruments on Parade: September 6 - Walking Field Trip to LHS
Fifth grade students will attend a concert at Lakewood High School during the afternoon of Friday, September 6. The program will showcase the outstanding music programs in the district. Performances will include the Orchestra, the Lakewood Project, Choir, Wind Ensemble, and a variety of solos and instrument groups as an introduction to the ensembles.
In Lakewood, fifth grade students are able to join band, orchestra, or general music. We are very fortunate to have such a wide range of opportunities in music for our students and this concert helps showcase potential learning experiences for them in the future. Directors will also share information about the process for trying out instruments and getting involved in the instrumental or general music programs that will take place in upcoming weeks.
Car Rider Information
- Please be sure to pull all the way to the stop sign near door 3 during the morning drop off process
- During car dismissal, parents must stay in the vehicle (students will enter on the right side/curb side of the car to keep them safe from other cars - please pull off to the left, if you need to help buckle your child).
- Students in the car line enter the building at 8:45 am and depart at 3:05 pm each day
Cell Phone and Personal Electronic Device Reminder
Student personal cell phones/electronic devices shall be turned off and put away in backpacks/lockers while on school property. If a caretaker needs to contact a child, please contact the school office at 216-529-4217. Please see our Family Handbook for further information. Thank you.
