Summer Learning Opportunities

There are many opportunities to keep your student reading this summer. Research shows that students who read during the summer gain reading skills, while those who don't tend to slide backwards. Help your student be prepared for next school year by encouraging them to read and participate in some of these learning opportunities.

Curtis Library Open Days

We will open the Curtis Library this summer so students can check out books, use the makerspace and computers, and visit with friends. The library will be open from 9:00-12:00 on June 11th & 25th and July 9th & 23rd (all Thursdays). Check-out will be available for all WISD students, even if they go to another school.

Weatherford Public Library Summer Reading Program

Weatherford Public Library will offer many activities and programs this summer to keep your child reading & learning! From Family Science Days on Saturdays to Summer Spectacular Programs on Thursdays to Discovery Station Days on Tuesdays, there are many activities to keep your kiddo entertained this summer. Best news-- it's FREE!

MackinVia Log In for Access to eBooks!

Students can read ebooks or access databases on a computer or any other device through MackinVia. To begin, either download the MackinVia app or go to Mackinvia.com. To login, they will type in Curtis Elementary for SCHOOL, firstname.lastname for USER ID, and their student ID (lunch number) for PASSWORD.

Stay Up to Date on Current Events!

Newsela has a summer reading challenge to help students with nonfiction articles about current events. Students coast to coast will answer the call to keep on reading about the world around them. Newsela's Summer Reading Challenge gives them the chance to earn badges, get newsroom promotions and climb in the standings, all while reading news and feature stories hot off the press.

Read 15 minutes a day for a month in June and July. (Grown-ups may read aloud to kids who are still learning.) Use this reading log , add up your minutes and have your parent or guardian initial each week. Once you’ve reached 300 or more minutes, bring your log to your local HPB to claim your Bookworm Bucks.

Camp Wonderopolis

Camp Wonderopolis is headed to new frontiers this year with a theme of Mission to Wonder. Camp will enable programs, families, and individuals to customize their experience to their needs while campers explore different tracks of STEM-based exploration. Along the way they will build their vocabulary, background knowledge, and literacy skills.

Google Maker Camp 2015

A FREE summer camp from Make: for building, tinkering and exploring. Participate online from home or find a camp host in your neighborhood! Last year Fort Worth Science & History Museum hosted a Maker Camp, so check their site as the date gets closer.


Join young inventors and artists from around the world in the Maker Camp Google Community to make awesome projects, go on epic virtual “field trips,” and meet the world’s coolest makers.

Syliva's Super Awesome

Super-Awesome Sylvia started making and tinkering with things when she was 7, and loves to try new things. One year after visiting Maker Faire, she and her dad were inspired to create a Web show about making things modestly titled, "Sylvia's Super-Awesome Maker Show", where she shows kids and adults that making things can be fun, easy and more rewarding than just buying something.


Millions of views later, Sylvia has covered everything from hobby rocketry, to sewable soft circuits. The show has garnered attention from parents and educators the world over. Learners of all ages report that the show gets students them in making things and learning something along the way. She is a girl scout and has three younger siblings.


Sylvia has been profiled on network news, People Magazine, and in the New York Times.


In 2014, Sylvia became an author by launching a series of full-color children's books, "Sylvia's Super-Awesome Project Books," published by Constructing Modern Knowledge Press.

Computer Coding

Learn additional coding skills this summer by continuing with Code.org. From the website: "Code.org offers an elementary school curriculum that allows even the youngest students to explore the limitless world of computing. Each of our 20-lesson courses blend online, self-guided and self-paced tutorials with “unplugged” activities that require no computer at all. By the end of each course, students can create interactive games, stories, and art that they can share with anyone."

DIY Online Maker Camps

Choose from a wide-ranging list of camps on the DIY site—from drawing to engineering—every month. Your kids can explore familiar interests or discover brand new passions.


Campers collaborate with a small group of other makers to offer each other high-fives and solve challenges together.
