A Note from Mr. Barrow
Dear McKenzie Families,
As we reflect on a vibrant fall season, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for the tremendous support and collaboration from our McKenzie School community. Your partnership has helped us continue meaningful traditions, activities, and initiatives that enrich our students’ learning, character, and school spirit. Here are some highlights from the season:
Red Ribbon Week
Our students celebrated Red Ribbon Week with themed days, including Pajama Day, Wear Red Day, Wellness Wednesday, and Wear the Color of Your Favorite Fruit/Vegetable Day, all promoting healthy habits and drug-free living. Students received water bottles, stickers, and rulers to reinforce their commitment to wellness.
Week of Respect
To recognize the Week of Respect, students participated in theme days such as Wear Blue Day, Wear Red Day for self-love, and Tie Dye Day to promote peace. Ms. Gomez visited each K-3 classroom to present on bullying prevention, where students took an anti-bullying pledge and received a sticker and certificate. Thank you to our teachers for fostering a respectful and supportive environment through these hands-on activities.
Character Education & SOAR Initiative
This season, our SOAR theme focused on “self-control,” featuring Mindful Monday, Talk it Out Tuesday, and Wise Wednesday. Students practiced self-regulation and awareness through read-alouds, mindfulness practices, and problem-solving exercises.
Celebrating Students of the Month
Each month, we recognize students who exemplify McKenzie School’s values at our Wildcat Assembly. Our “Wildcat of the Month” award highlights well-rounded students who demonstrate kindness, exceptional behavior, and a commitment to learning.
School Spirit & Community Support
During Spirit Week, McKenzie students and staff proudly wore pink on October 17th in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Halloween was a highlight with our annual parade, and we are grateful to the PTA for providing decorations and to the East Rutherford Police Department (ERPD) for their safety presentations and trick-or-treat supplies. A special thank you to the ERPD for their ongoing support, especially on Halloween, and to the East Rutherford Fire Department for our October fire safety assemblies and tips for students.
Veterans Day Assembly
We recently honored our local veterans with a heartfelt assembly led by our 3rd-grade TAG and Pre-K 3 students, a meaningful expression of respect and gratitude to those who have served.
In closing, I invite you to explore our website at www.erboe.net to view progress reports and report cards under the Genesis Parent Access link, located in the McKenzie "For Families" tab. Art
It’s Turkey Time
This week was filled with laughter and creativity as our kindergarteners embraced the theme of Thanksgiving. Their enthusiasm and artistic expressions brought so much joy to the classroom, we couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishments. Our kindergarten classes have been busy creating wonderful paper turkeys using construction paper, glue and crayons.
Under guidance of Mrs. Speer, the children explored photos of real turkeys and discussed the vibrant colors used in artistic interpretations. They cut out different parts of the turkey and glued them together, adding their creative touch with bright colors. At the end of the class, the students joyfully held up the creations and waddled around the classroom, celebrating their hard work.
Technology
In technology class, students in grades K-3 have been learning how to use their Chromebooks for a variety of different lessons and projects. In grades 2 and 3 students have been learning how to navigate Google Classroom and how to use Google Docs for different assignments and projects. In grades K and1 students have been practicing how to click and drag using the trackpad on the Chromebook and also completing lessons using Google Slides.
Spanish
¡Bienvenidos a español!
What a great start to a great year! I am amazed at how much students remember from last year and how much Spanish they are using both in and out of the classroom! They are so eager to learn the language and are doing extremely well. In Kindergarten, we are learning the basics of Spanish such as greetings, emotions, colors, and numbers. In first grade, we are learning about ages, birthdays, and the calendar. In second grade, we are learning about families and physical descriptions. In third grade, we are learning about travel and geography. In fourth grade, we are learning about sports. And in fifth grade we are learning about introductions and identity. Throughout all of these topics, students will learn how to hold conversations, ask and answer questions, and read and write in Spanish. Thank you for all of your support! I am looking forward to a fantastic year supporting your learners in this beautiful process of language learning.
Pre-K
Over the past month, students have explored the world of apples by conducting an Apple Study. We discussed facts we already knew about apples and created a list of questions we wanted answered. The classes explored the parts of apples by taking part in labeling activities as well as learning the names of various types of apples such as Granny Smith, Red and Golden Delicious. Our preschool friends also conducted math lessons by counting groups of seeds, comparing groups of apples and measuring our classmates using apples. The students explored the life cycle of an apple by sequencing picture cards. Students read various nonfiction books about apples and we turned our Dramatic Play Area into an Apple Orchard where they picked and sold apples to classmates. Last, students learned about the term “predict” as they guessed what would happen when one slice of apple was placed in water and the other in lemon juice. In the upcoming months, students will explore additional fall related activities (pumpkins/leaves) as well as a new Creative Curriculum study about buildings!
First Grade
Miss Palladino
In first grade, students are exploring the building blocks of storytelling by learning about story elements such as characters, setting, problem, and solution. In phonics, students have been identifying patterns in words to help them read and write. As they develop their mathematical thinking, they practice strategies for addition, such as counting on and using number lines, which helps them become more confident in their problem-solving skills. At the same time, they are strengthening their abilities as writers by constructing simple sentences, expanding vocabulary, and learning to organize their thoughts. Through hands-on activities and guided practice, first graders are growing into more skilled readers and writers, laying a strong foundation for their future learning. First graders are also enjoy incorporating seasonal themes into their stories and writing, drawing inspiration from the changing leaves, fall celebrations, and crisp weather around them.
Third Grade
Mrs. Alkhalidi
Our third graders have been busy learning about weather and climate patterns! Students investigated and made predictions about the weather through careful observation of the clouds and wind. Students were also given the opportunity to compare and contrast weather climates around the world! Through these learning experiences, our third graders were then tasked to build a model home that could withstand challenging weather conditions. Using what they learned from this unit of study and real-life discussion about hurricane Milton, students successfully came up with ways to protect their homes from wind and rain!
