February 2025 Volume 2
A Note from Mr. Barrow
Dear McKenzie Families,
As we reflect on a vibrant fall season, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for the tremendous support and collaboration from our McKenzie School community. Your partnership has helped us continue meaningful traditions, activities, and initiatives that enrich our students’ learning, character, and school spirit. Here are some highlights from the season:
Red Ribbon Week
Our students celebrated Red Ribbon Week with themed days, including Pajama Day, Wear Red Day, Wellness Wednesday, and Wear the Color of Your Favorite Fruit/Vegetable Day, all promoting healthy habits and drug-free living. Students received water bottles, stickers, and rulers to reinforce their commitment to wellness.
Week of Respect
To recognize the Week of Respect, students participated in theme days such as Wear Blue Day, Wear Red Day for self-love, and Tie Dye Day to promote peace. Ms. Gomez visited each K-3 classroom to present on bullying prevention, where students took an anti-bullying pledge and received a sticker and certificate. Thank you to our teachers for fostering a respectful and supportive environment through these hands-on activities.
Character Education & SOAR Initiative
This season, our SOAR theme focused on “self-control,” featuring Mindful Monday, Talk it Out Tuesday, and Wise Wednesday. Students practiced self-regulation and awareness through read-alouds, mindfulness practices, and problem-solving exercises.
Celebrating Students of the Month
Each month, we recognize students who exemplify McKenzie School’s values at our Wildcat Assembly. Our “Wildcat of the Month” award highlights well-rounded students who demonstrate kindness, exceptional behavior, and a commitment to learning.
School Spirit & Community Support
During Spirit Week, McKenzie students and staff proudly wore pink on October 17th in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Halloween was a highlight with our annual parade, and we are grateful to the PTA for providing decorations and to the East Rutherford Police Department (ERPD) for their safety presentations and trick-or-treat supplies. A special thank you to the ERPD for their ongoing support, especially on Halloween, and to the East Rutherford Fire Department for our October fire safety assemblies and tips for students.
Veterans Day Assembly
We recently honored our local veterans with a heartfelt assembly led by our 3rd-grade TAG and Pre-K 3 students, a meaningful expression of respect and gratitude to those who have served.
In closing, I invite you to explore our website at www.erboe.net to view progress reports and report cards under the Genesis Parent Access link, located in the McKenzie "For Families" tab. Gifted & Talented/Enrichment
Ms. Bleich
In our Enrichment and Gifted & Talented classes this marking period, we have been diving into a variety of exciting topics! From state studies to weather patterns and animal adaptations, it's been a month full of discovery and hands-on learning.
Second graders have been exploring the history, geography, and culture of different U.S. states. Each student has researched a state, learning about famous landmarks, regional foods, and the state's role in American history. It’s been wonderful to see students developing an appreciation for the diverse regions of our country.
As part of our weather unit, students have been investigating weather patterns and the science behind them. We've explored different types of clouds, precipitation, and the water cycle.
In addition to studying weather, we've researched how animals adapt to their environments. Students have learned about physical and behavioral adaptations that help animals survive in their habitats, from camouflage to migration. A favorite activity of the month was our owl pellet dissection! Students were thrilled to carefully examine the pellets to uncover bones of small animals, gaining a deeper understanding of owl diets and the food chain.
Stay tuned for more enriching adventures in the upcoming months!
