Mrs. Mohr's Weekly Update
November 4th - 8th
Hello!
The weather is starting to get chilly! All students have the opportunity to go outside during the day. Elementary students have two recess periods, Middle school students can go outside on the playground after lunch, and High school students have open campus. Please make sure your child has appropriate outdoor gear for the colder temperatures.
We had a short day on Monday, due to work needing to be done on a water line in front of the school. Thank you for your patience and flexibility while that was being fixed.
Monday is the first day of our 2nd quarter! First quarter report cards will be mailed out soon.

SDHSAA Economic Impact Survey
Dear Parents/Guardians/Fans,
The SDHSAA is attempting to gather the economic impact data of our state events for the purposes of engaging local chambers of commerce to explore ways to keep costs to families down and to explore cost saving avenues for our member schools. We started this last year with state volleyball and will end it this fall with state football. Your responses are confidential and are anonymously compiled within the IMPLAN Economic Impact computer program. No identifying data will be asked of you or used within the study. We appreciate you taking the time to help us with this undertaking. Your feedback is necessary and appreciated. If possible, please take the survey as soon after your event as possible, as our IMPLAN license runs out shortly after the fall season. The survey can be accessed at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DS7TQNX
Once again, I thank you for your time and I thank you for supporting high school education-based athletics and activities.
Sincerely,
Dan Swartos
SDHSAA Executive Director
2nd Grade Math
The past few weeks, the 2nd graders have been solving math story problems referencing the game Mancala, one of the oldest games played all over the world. We borrowed enough games to play a few times this week!
3rd Grade Pumpkins
The 3rd graders gutted pumpkins with Mrs. Seiver’s Fundamental Foods class. The next day, the 3rd graders used the pumpkin seeds in math class for a lesson on multiplication to create arrays. Eventually 3rd graders baked the seeds with Mrs. Seivert’s Culinary I class.
8th Grade English
8th Grade has been working hard on learning about figurative language.
The students created a real estate ad selling a haunted house using alliteration, idiom, metaphor, simile, personification, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, and sensory descriptive language. They then presented their ads to the class. The class then determined the seller's target audience to which they were marketing their haunted house.
HS Choir Trip
Members of the HS Choir went on an outing to Sioux Falls this weekend to listen to South Dakota's All State Band & Choir concert. Willow Lake was unable to have a quartet participate this year, but have high hopes that we will have one next year. The group was not able to see Levi, due to doctor's orders, but were able to drop off a care package to him! :D He is missed in our choir!
NHS Mitten Drive
Book It!
Elementary students! Turn in your BOOK IT! calendars! Students who return all of their calendars for the next 6 months will get to attend a school pizza party in the spring!
Guitar Lessons
Guitars Needed!
To our school family & community members: the Willow Lake Music Department is in need of guitars! We have many, many students interested in guitar lessons, but we have a very limited number of guitars. If you’d be willing to donate an unused acoustic guitar, or let a student borrow one, please talk Mrs. Vandersnick or to Pastor Colin Beveridge, our guest instructor. Thank you so much!
W.L. Music Department will be offering Guitar Lessons after school on Mondays, beginning on Oct. 7. It will be a Group Lesson format, and it’s open to people of all ages! Students and people from the community are welcome to take part. All experience levels are welcome! The guest instructor will be Colin Beveridge, pastor at Bethlehem Lutheran in Vienna and Grace Lutheran in Willow Lake. Come to the music room between 3:15 and 3:30 on Monday, Oct. 7 for our first meeting. Reach out to Kristin Vandersnick with any questions.
Shoppe 416 is offering delivery of their drinks and treats – Staff and HS students will be able to order on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. 8th Grade will be able to order on Wednesday, 7th Grade will be able to order on Thursday and 6th Grade on Friday. The order forms are on the counter in the office and will be picked up at 10:00am sharp and delivery will be at 12:00.
Lost & Found
There are lots of items on the lost and found table! Have your student stop by and see if anything is theirs.
Thoughts from Erica: Levi's been awake quite a bit more now that he's been done with this round of chemo so that's been great to see! He did end up developing a rash and some mouth and gum inflammation from the chemo this time, but both seem to be clearing up. He's been eating soft foods when his mouth has been bothering him and lucky for him ice cream is easy to eat with a sore mouth 😋.
Currently his ANC is at zero and he is at a high risk for infections so they have him on a preventative antibiotic like previous months. The doctors did mention that with his next round of chemo there is an even greater risk of infection so he will continue to be closely monitored as any infection could complicate his treatment.
As he goes along in his treatment it most likely will take longer for his blood counts to come back after his treatments. Typically they say usually around day 29 (day 1 is considered the first day of chemo for that cycle) is when patients get to go home for a bit. His first round he came home right on day 29 and the second round was even earlier so we will see how this round turns out.
His football obsession has helped him pass the time as there is some sort of football on most nights of the week. He was able to talk to his Cyclone football teammates after their playoff win last week and is looking forward to watching the game this Thursday. He loves being part of the team and wears his jersey while he watches. He also plans to watch the volleyball game tomorrow too so he will be full of Cyclone pride this week 🧡.
My employer, Reliabank, will be providing and serving the food at the volleyball game tomorrow night so make sure you go hungry!
