Semi-Annual Music Notes
If you are one of those individuals who appreciates knowing the concert selections before attending the event, this is for you!
The Semi-Annual Concert features LaGuardia's top music ensembles, the LaGuardia Philharmonic and Senior Chorus. This year’s program promises to be a powerful fusion of music and visual art, showcasing the immense talent of our students.
Featured Program:
Moussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (Orchestrated by Maurice Ravel) In a unique collaboration between the Instrumental and Fine Arts studios, we will present Moussorgsky’s iconic Pictures at an Exhibition. As the music is performed by the LaGuardia Philharmonic, images created by our Fine Arts students will be projected on stage, corresponding with each movement. This immersive experience highlights both the work's complexity and beauty, adding a visual dimension to Moussorgsky’s music.
LaGuardia Senior Chorus: Considering Matthew Shepard: A Choral Suite
The Senior Chorus, conducted by Jana Ballard, will also perform Considering Matthew Shepard: A Choral Suite by Craig Hella Johnson. This powerful three-part oratorio blends various musical styles to tell the story of Matthew Shepard, whose tragic death became a symbol of the fight against hate and violence. The piece incorporates texts from poets, including Rumi, Hildegard of Bingen, and Lesléa Newman, alongside poignant writings from Matthew's journal and the Shepard family.
Program Highlights:
LaGuardia Philharmonic:
- La Procesión del Rocio – Joaquin Turina
- Pictures at an Exhibition – Modest Moussorgsky (Orchestrated by Maurice Ravel)
LaGuardia Senior Chorus:
- Abendlied, Op. 69, No. 3 – Josef Rheinberger
- Kyrie in D Minor – Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy
- Song for Athene – John Tavener
- Considering Matthew Shepard: A Choral Suite – Craig Hella Johnson

From Our Parent Coordinator, Jerrianna Phenix
Dear LaGuardia Parents,
For many, January represents setting new intentions. This month, the words of our 44th President Barak Obama, feel exceptionally right. Once caught in passing by a news journalist asking what his late mother would have thought about his achievement of the presidency. Without missing a beat he responded, “actually, I think she would have been prouder of the way that I became president.” Believing that how a person conducts themselves is vastly more important than accomplishment. Doing things the right way still matters. Words and actions aligning matters. Keeping one’s word matters.
The integrous point really hit home as we welcomed our new AP of Math and Science, Ms. Bechard, to last Friday’s Coffee and Donuts. “Refreshing” and “genuine” were consistent words used to describe how our parents received her vision and action items. The throughline of Bechard’s overarching message centers on sharing with our students that there are many different pathways to success, and our math and science programming should be reflective of that. Therefore, anytime a student is struggling to pass a course or is impacted by a low grade, families should reach out to the assigned guidance counselor for prompt support.
Last, please remember to mark your calendar for the next set of LaGuardia events:
Rising Stars, Friday, February 7, 6pm, Saturday, February 8, 1pm & 6pm, and Sunday, February 9, 2pm. Regents Testing Week is 1/21 through 1/24. Students who are not scheduled to take tests or have no programming are not required to attend school as classes are not in session.
As always, thank you for your continued collaboration and spirited discussions. I feel privileged to work with all of you as we strive to move the needle forward, every day. If something is pressing, please reach out to me via email or direct cell, (914-372-6360). In the meantime, I will continue to keep my promise of providing all families with accurate and timely information.
Warmest regards,
JA

Avoid Getting Others Sick
NoroVirus
Flue Safey
- Avoid getting others sick Your child should follow these precautions when home sick and for the next five days after they return to school, work, and other activities, as they still may be contagious.
- Wear a well-fitting mask that covers both the nose and mouth whenever around other people.
- Continue to keep a distance from others, especially those at higher risk of serious illness. This includes people age 65 and older, people who have a weakened immune system, and people with underlying health conditions that increase the risk of serious illness.
- When indoors and around others, take steps to improve ventilation if possible, such as opening windows and using an exhaust fan.
- Practice good hygiene by covering coughs and sneezes, washing hands often, using hand sanitizer, and cleaning frequently touched surfaces.
- If your child develops a fever or starts to feel worse after they have gone back to normal activities, they should stay home and away from others again until, for at least 24 hours, their symptoms are improving overall and they have not had a fever (and are not taking fever-reducing medicine). Then take the above additional precautions for the next 5 days.
- Consider wearing a mask: Masks are an important layer of protection to stop the spread of COVID-19, flu, and other respiratory viruses. You should always wear a mask when sick and around other people or if you were recently exposed to someone with a respiratory illness. You may also consider wearing a mask at other times, such as crowded indoor settings, particularly if you or your child is at high risk for severe illness with a respiratory virus like COVID-19 or around others who are, such as grandparents or other older adults.
- Masks will also be required when entering the school medical room when the nurse suspects the student has respiratory symptoms
- Wear a high-quality mask, such as a KN95, KF94 or N95 for the best protection.
