Weekly Memo
Some thoughts for the starting school year
Hi Everyone,
We hope you are enjoying the week.
Our extracurricular activities have been busy. The performances by our Drama Club on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday were excellent. Stay tuned for next month's production of "The Christmas Carol". Our football team had an awesome playoff game last Friday (plus a warm November football game was a bonus!). Our field hockey team battled last Saturday morning and lost in a close game to Freeport. Our girls and boys cross country teams ran excellent races, with Zoe Carroll earning the top spot to become the Class B State Champion. Our boys soccer team played a tough Yarmouth team Saturday afternoon and represented YHS with class and we could not be more proud of them. And finally, our varsity volleyball team played an undefeated Washington Academy last Saturday night in their first state championship appearance. It was the most exciting game and both teams earned every single point, but we lost in the fourth set. It was amazing that they made it to this level and they should be proud of their season
Get ready, and get excited, because tomorrow, November 8, is the sixth annual Day of Welcome. Our civil rights team and civil rights teams all across Maine will celebrate and promote the idea that our school communities are for everyone. More than 425 welcoming events have been held by civil rights teams in Maine schools since the launch of the annual Day of Welcome campaign in 2019.
This event is sponsored by the Maine Office of the Attorney General through the Civil Rights Team Project, who support us in our work of engaging the school community in thinking and talking about issues related to race and skin color, national origin and ancestry, religion, disabilities, gender (including gender identity and expression), and sexual orientation. The Civil Rights Team Project and civil rights teams are supported in this work by state law and our school policies.
Our civil rights team wants to use the Day of Welcome to make a powerful statement about the kind of school community we all want, while introducing ourselves and engaging our peers in understanding our ongoing work. Last year we welcomed students at the door with a message and a treat. This year we will be greeting students as they enter the building with a banner to sign to encourage our school community to welcome everyone.
Enjoy the rest of your week and have a safe weekend. As always, if you need anything or have any questions please reach out to Liza or me.
Thanks,
Amanda
