Welcome Letter from Mr. Bloom

Dear Charles Boehm Community,


It is with great excitement that I introduce myself as the incoming Principal of Charles Boehm Middle School. My name is Travis Bloom and I cannot wait to begin our journey together.


I am a proud graduate of Berwick Area High School. My Undergraduate Degree is from Kutztown University. During my time at Kutztown, I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education with a concentration in History. The next step was to obtain my Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Wilkes University. I currently have half of my credits for my Doctorate in Educational Leadership at Drexel. I am hoping to complete this over the next few years.


My teaching career started in the Allentown School District. I taught at Louis E. Dieruff High School, teaching 9th-grade United States History. Upon leaving Dieruff High School, I went on to become an Assistant Principal at Muhlenberg Middle School in the Muhlenberg School District, which is located outside of Reading, Pennsylvania. Prior to coming to Klinger Middle School, I served as the Assistant Principal at Eyer Middle School in the East Penn School District. I then made the transition to the Centennial School District serving as the Principal of Klinger Middle School. I have been in this position for the past four school years. My experiences have allowed me to work in diverse settings with all types of learners. This has provided valuable experience that I will bring to Charles Boehm Middle School. My goal with any school is to make the students so excited that they are running back into the building because of the experiences we provide.


My family and I live in Doylestown. We love being able to walk into town and enjoy the idea of small-town living. Our daughter Kendall is getting ready to start 2nd-grade in the Central Bucks School District. As a parent first, I always picture the educational environment that I want for her and I constantly use this lens in my role as a building principal. My fiance, Jennifer, is a principal in the New Hope-Solebury School District. We often joke that our poor daughter doesn’t have a chance with two parents as educators. We have a 4-year old yellow lab named Finley who keeps us on our toes. We enjoy spending time down on the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware Beaches. I enjoy reading, running, snowboarding, and watching my favorite sports teams (New York Yankees, Oakland Raiders, Penn State, and Florida State). I am slowly conforming to Philadelphia sports as I do attend both Eagles and Phillies games with my fiance. She is a diehard Philadelphia fan! As a former wrestling and football coach, you can always find me out on the fields watching our athletes compete.


As I said during the school board meeting, I cannot wait to join this successful learning community that has been led by Mrs. Ricci. I am extremely excited to write the next chapter in my educational journey. I cannot wait to meet the students and all of the wonderful Boehm parents. I am looking forward to a great year with you all.

I believe that we should all strive for excellence every day. Our students and our schools deserve the best we can bring each day. We understand that excellence does not mean perfection. Excellence is something we strive for because we didn't become educators to be average.

Literacy

Literacy is the starting path to all learning. Students need to be critical readers and proficient writers. By harnessing the power of fiction and non-fiction texts, we can expose students to a variety of learning experiences. By developing proficient writers we are able to engage students in sharing their voice and their knowledge in a variety of ways.

Design Thinking/Critical Problem Solving

The roles of schools continue to evolve. We no longer need to train memorizers or fact finders. We need to create problem solvers and critical thinkers. We need our students to be able to solve problems that we don't even know exist. We are preparing them for jobs that have not even been created yet.

Passion Learning/Personalized Learning

I know that I excelled when I was passionate about what I was learning. We have a responsibility to teach our curriculums. However, I also feel we have the responsibility to help students find their passions in both our content areas and outside our content areas. When we step outside our comfort zones and discover our passions that is when true learning happens!

School Culture

My first passion in education surrounds school culture and how the impact of an effective culture leads to high-performing schools. The goal of any school should be to have students running into the building because they enjoy it so much. Every Tuesday night I co-moderate a Twitter Chat called #CultureEd. This chat focuses on everything pertaining to positive school cultures. Educators around the world join in to discuss effective ways to grow and improve school culture. We are fortunate to have educational experts guest moderate our chat throughout the year. This gives me an opportunity to grow and learn every single week from the best educators around the world.

Being a Connected Educator

By harnessing the power of social media and social learning I have been able to build relationships and connect with the best educators around the world. The learning and growth that I have experienced as an educator from those within the different school districts I have had the pleasure to serve and from those around the country cannot be understated. We want all students to be life-long learners, as educators, it is our responsibility to model this approach to learning. By connecting with those within our organizations and outside our organizations we afford ourselves

Technology Integration

As a former Classrooms of the Future Teacher, I have found that being able to integrate technology as a teacher and administrator can help transform the learning experience for our students! I am always researching new tools that will enhance the learning experiences for our students. We must always remember when it comes to technology, it is just a tool. We must focus on the learning and the learning outcomes first. We then look to different tools that will enhance the experience for our students.

My Family

I am lucky enough to have an awesome family. We live in Doylestown. We are fortunate to be able to walk to all the shops and restaurants. Kendall is about to turn 8 and going into 2nd-grade. She loves reading, playing soccer, and has created her own maker-space in our house. Jennifer is the Principal at New Hope-Solebury Lower Elementary School. We are excited about our upcoming wedding in July! We made our first family trip to Disney this past April. I think I may have had more fun than Kendall!

Life on the Water

Since I was a kid, I have loved being on the water. I am lucky enough that Jenn and Kendall love that, as well. We have a Searay Sundeck that we keep down on the Chesapeake Bay! When we eventually retire we (I) want to purchase a sailboat and just sail to all the islands in the Carribean. At least that is my dream! Jenn prefers a house in Anna Maria Florida!

Sports

I am a New York Yankees, Oakland Raiders, Florida State and Penn State fan. It is a running joke that I have no allegiances when it comes to sports teams. However, as Jenn is from Upper Darby she is transforming me into a Philly fan. We even banged pots and pans when the Eagles won the Super Bowl. I had never heard of that before. Luckily the entire street was doing the same.

Traveling

Jenn and I love to travel! We visited historical Saint Michaels this summer. We have travelled to Florida and Antigua. We want to try to visit all the Carribean Islands. I want to do it by boat but we will see how that plays out!

Our Pup

Finley is a 5-year old yellow lab. She may be the most high maintenance dog on the planet! Kendall does a great job of taking care of her. Finley loves to ride in the truck and enjoys the bay also.
