Jaguars of the Week
Summer Learning Challenge - Parent Survey
CLICK HERE to let us know if your child participated in the Summer Learning Challenge. We will provide incentives to students who completed one or more of the Summer Learning Challenges. We lost all of our IXL and LEXIA data over the summer and can not verify if students completed the Summer Learning Challenge. We will provide incentives next week. If you have questions, please reach out to the building principal phaugens@sd13.org.
Curriculum Night - Save the Date
We are excited to invite you to our upcoming Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 12, 2024. This event is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn more about the academic program and expectations for the school year.
Please note that this is a parent-only event.
There will be two identical sessions to accommodate parents with multiple students:
- First Session: 6:00 PM - 6:40 PM
- Second Session: 6:40 PM - 7:20 PM
You only need to attend one session, as the same information will be presented at both.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Food Drive
We are reaching out to ask for your support in our effort to help those in need within our community. We are organizing a food drive to collect canned goods and nonperishable items for the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
Hunger is a serious issue that affects many families in our area. Did you know:
- In Illinois, 1,506,320 people are facing hunger - and of them 426,600 are children.
- The average cost of a meal in Illinois is $3.98.
The Northern Illinois Food Bank works tirelessly to provide nutritious food to those who need it most, but they need our help to continue this vital work. By contributing even a small amount, you can make a big difference in the lives of families facing hunger.
We encourage you to bring in canned goods and other nonperishable items to school over the next two weeks. Collection boxes will be located in the lobby for each grade level.
Thank you for joining us in this important effort to support our community.
MAP Testing
Students started taking the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessment this week. The MAP test is a computer-adaptive assessment that provides us with detailed information about your child’s academic strengths and areas for growth in subjects like math and reading. This data helps us tailor instruction to meet each student’s individual needs and track their academic progress throughout the year.
Testing will continue the rest of this week and possibly early next week. Students who are absent will take Make-Ups in the near future. Please look for specific dates and times in the communication from your child's classroom teacher.
AR Reading Program
I’m excited to share that our Accelerated Reader program is up and running! Click here for more information about the Accelerated Reader program at DuJardin.
This program is designed to motivate students to read more, develop strong reading habits, and improve their reading comprehension skills.
Through the AR program, students will:
- Choose books at their appropriate reading levels.
- Take quizzes after finishing their books to assess understanding.
- Earn points and track their progress toward personalized reading goals.
Our goal is to foster a love of reading in each student while also helping them grow as confident, independent readers. We encourage you to support your child’s reading at home by setting aside dedicated reading time and discussing their AR goals.
If you have any questions about the program, feel free to reach out to Mrs. Shermak hshermak@sd13.org or Ms. Burton aburton@sd13.org.
Message from Principal Haugens
Dear Parents,
To start the school year, we have been stressing the importance of being at school on time each day. We feel punctuality sets the tone for a positive day and helps children start their morning with the routine and structure that leads to academic success.
When students arrive on time:
- They don’t miss key instructional time at the beginning of the day.
- They feel more prepared and confident as they settle into their learning environment.
- They build positive habits that benefit them now and in the future.
Arriving late to school can disrupt not only your child’s learning but also the entire class. Establishing strong routines at home can help avoid rushed mornings, making the transition to school smoother for everyone.
Thank you for your support in helping us create an environment where students are set up for success every day.

- Health Office Website
Student Needs:
Please inform the nurse of any allergies or sensitivities to foods, medications, and environmental allergens. If there are any pertinent details of your students' health that you feel the nurse needs to know, please reach out and discuss this with the school nurse. This information can be helpful to better support your student throughout the day, if certain situations arise.
About Your Student’s Medication:
The district's medication administration policy mandates that all medication to be administered at school requires an MD order, this includes over-the-counter medications. Students may NOT keep over-the-counter meds in their backpacks or in their lockers--including cough drops, Advil, etc. This is an important safety concern! Please review the policy included in the registration process.
If your student requires an inhaler, Epi-Pen, or any oral medication, please obtain the medication form and appropriate health care plan from your physician when your child has their exam. Forms may also be obtained on the district website.
Excused Physical Education Class:
Please note that all PE excuses need to be sent to the Nurse's Office. A parent may excuse a student from PE for up to 3 days. (consecutively) Thereafter, a Doctor's note is required.
