🏆🐝 Kiyara Gunawardena Places 3rd at Historic 100th RCOE Spelling Bee!
The 100th anniversary of the Riverside County Spelling Bee was one for the history books, and TVUSD’s own Kiyara Gunawardena made sure to leave her mark! Competing against the best spellers in the county, the Abby Reinke Elementary 5th grader tied for 3rd place after an incredible 21-round battle.
The competition was fierce, with all six remaining contestants returning in round 19 after what seemed like an elimination moment for all. The Bee ultimately stretched to 22 intense rounds, showcasing the dedication and skill of each speller.
This marks Kiyara’s second time finishing in the top 3 at the county level, a testament to her dedication and hard work! In preparation for this year’s event, she meticulously studied the official list of 4,000 words, reviewing them four times for a total of 16,000 words mastered! With three more years of eligibility, we can’t wait to see her continue competing for a chance to qualify for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Maryland.
We are incredibly proud to have Kiyara represent TVUSD with her poise, positivity, and determination and look forward to the arrival of her well-earned trophy from RCOE! A huge thank you to everyone who has supported Kiyara along the way.
