Topic of the week: Types of Homework

Why Do Teachers Assign Different Types of Homework?

While doing her math homework, your child says, “Why do I have to do the same kinds of problems over and over? I’m tired of them!”

It’s true that teachers sometimes assign repetitive homework, and it’s helpful for students and parents to know why. Here are four kinds of assignments—and the reasons teachers use them:

1. Practice homework. Doing the same kind of work repeatedly helps students remember a skill. This is especially true when it comes to learning math, word definitions and spelling.

2. Preparation homework. This is a way to introduce students to new topics. For instance, students might read a book about animals before studying animal families.

3. Extension homework. Students need to be able to connect separate topics. For example, they might be asked to compare and contrast two historic events.

4. Creative homework. Teachers like to challenge students to use different skills to show what they’ve learned. For instance, your child might be asked to build a model for science class.

Of course, all homework builds your child’s self-discipline. So remind her that even if she doesn’t see a reason for a homework assignment, she still must do it.

Thank you to all who came out to support us and helped raise money for the school and the students, what a fun evening! A special thank you to all the man local businesses who donated items for prizes or made direct donations to support our fundraiser and the volunteers who helped make it possible.

If you won an auction item and have not yet picked it up, please pick it up by the front desk before the break or email the PAT to make arrangements. A few items were left from bingo night, which I have posted on https://www.facebook.com/MoscowCharterSchool for online bidding - so feel free to check them out and share them with friends and family! Bids can be made in the comment section.

We are having a fundraiser at MOD Pizza on Thursday, April 16th from 10 am to 9 pm. If you mention Moscow Charter School or show them the flyer at checkout at MOD Pizza 20 percent of your purchase will go to support Moscow Charter School.

The Box Top Competition have started!!! This year we will switch things up a bit. If the whole school collects more than $200 worth of Box Tops by using the app on their phones to scan their receipts by May 15th the PAT will buy popsicles for everyone at the school! To break down the math that means that every kid should SCAN about 11 box tops in order to reach that goal. Box Tops can be collected every time you buy some of the participating products - please see the photo of participating products. I strongly encourage everyone to scan their receipts by using the Box Tops mobile app as it is a great way to earn money for the school and will benefit the kids at Moscow Charter School and it is easy to use. Currently, the school year earnings are $13.60 (the $205 is what we earned at the last competition), we can do way better than that. So let's do this!

We will still be collecting the physical Box Tops as people might still have some laying around, so to really get the excitement going about the Box Top Competition this time around, we will do a Donut Party for the class that collects the most physical Box Tops! So we will have two competitions going on ... START COLLECTING!!!

Moscow Police Chief James Fry will be presenting to our community parent groups on Thursday, April 2, 2020, at 7:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall. James Fry will be talking about Moscow’s drug problem and the drugs that are currently coming into our area. In addition, he will be speaking about what the Moscow Police Department is doing to combat the drug crisis. All parents are welcome to attend.

Amazon Smile is another great way to earn money for the school while doing your regular shopping. Please go to https://smile.amazon.com/ and sign up to earn money for our school. Every time you want to buy something on Amazon, you go to smile amazon instead, then search for your item and check out, that way a small percentage goes back to Moscow Charter School.

The PAT has approved the following requests:

• $400 to get Annette Bay Pimentel out for Bookabunga.
• $350 for 18 sensory and calming tools for the school counselor.
• $130 for 22 new dictionaries for 4th grade.
• $90 for a classroom magnet set and an Electromagnetic Kit for 1st grade.
