Middle School Update

The ALRT! presentations this week were a success! Hopefully your student came home and discussed with you. Thank you to The Abbott House for providing this service for our students!

Spring Break: Spring Break starts tomorrow and goes through Monday, March 24th. Students report back on Tuesday, March 25th. Enjoy your break!

TDAP Clinic for in-coming 7th grade students: On Wednesday, April 9th, we are offering a clinic here to get your TDAP vaccination. You must have the vaccination or an exemption on file to enter 7th grade (see more info in "A Note from the Nurse" section.

Extracurricular absences: Next week starts the busy spring sports season. Be aware, when students miss school for school sporting events, they need to check with teachers, get work, and turn it in on its due date or the day after (if the due date is the date of the event). No extra time is given for sports absences per our Student Handbook: "If a student is to be absent for an extracurricular activity, it is his/her responsibility to collect any available assignment that will be missed prior to absence and have all work handed in no later than one day after the school activity unless other arrangements have been made with the teacher. The known absence gives the student an opportunity to work ahead or during down time at an event."

Behaviors: As we get closer to summer, we sometimes notice an increase in unwanted behaviors among middle school students. To address this, our teachers have been instructed to document any concerning behaviors in Teacherease as behavior logs. They may also reach out to you via email or phone to ensure you’re informed about your child’s actions.

It’s important that students understand these behavior logs and communications are taken seriously both at school and at home. Your support in reinforcing this message is invaluable, and we greatly appreciate your partnership in helping maintain a positive and respectful learning environment. Thank you for your continued collaboration!

YONDR Reminder: At Oakdale, our policy regarding YONDR pouches is designed to maintain a focused and distraction-free learning environment. If a student brings a phone, smartwatch, or other device to school, it must remain secured in a YONDR pouch for the entire school day.

We rely on an honor system to ensure compliance; however, violations of this trust may result in disciplinary action. If a student or parent prefers not to use the YONDR pouches, the device should be left at home during school hours.

PTC is so excited for Teacher Appreciation Week March 31st - April 4th. Our theme is “Chasing the Endless Summer” and we can’t wait! There are two different SignUp Geniuses to join the fun! We will also be celebrating our teachers with the optional opportunity to shower them with love and gratitude.

Monday, March 31st: Bring a single stem flower to help build a bouquet. PTC will provide the vases.

Wednesday, April 2nd: Wear your favorite sunset shirt or sunset colors to thank our teachers for being such a light in our lives.

Friday, April 4th: Create a handmade card or picture expressing your love for our teachers and school.

Remember to bring:
All students are required to have their own golf clubs, proper golf attire; including collared shirts and appropriate shorts (no gym shorts). A hat or visor and personal water bottle are recommended, along with the use of sunscreen.

Reminder: All medication at school needs to be kept in the office with a completed Authorization for the Administration of Medication Form (AAMF). The exceptions for medications: asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetes, and pancreatic enzymes may be carried by the student with a completed Authorization for the Administration of Medication Form filed in the nurse's office.

From the Oakdale Student Handbook:

An Authorization for the Administration of Medication Form (AAMF) must be completed and returned to the school before medication can be administered by school personnel. The only medications students are allowed to carry and self-administer during school or school activities are asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetes and replacement pancreatic enzymes, and a completed AAMF form is required.

Dusti Bowling Book Clubs: It's not too late for your 6th, 7th, or 8th grader to join one of our Dusti Bowling book clubs. Mrs. Bowling is an author who will be visiting our school on April 14. Students can still purchase books from the Middle School library for $7.50 each. See the flyer for titles and additional information.

This week in the library...

All 8th grade classes got to have a book tasting in the last month in hopes of them finding a new book to read for pleasure. This week, some 8th grade classes had a "Bring Your Own Book" book club where they discussed their independent reading book in small groups and played a game.

7th grade classes were introduced to databases. We discussed the pros and cons of databases and just using the internet. Students were able to practice and get acquainted with EBSCO Middle School Explora, the database we use for research in the library.

6th grade classes reviewed online sources: websites, web articles, online dictionaries, online thesauruses, online encyclopedias, interactive atlases, and blogs. Students then practiced selecting which source was best for particular scenarios.
