Update

February 27, 2025
Dear SHS Community,
I hope this newsletter finds you well. During the February 13th Board of Education meeting, the district calendar was revised, resulting in a change to the last day of school. Consequently, Secaucus High School's graduation ceremony is now scheduled for the evening of June 25th.
Please note that this is a confirmed graduation date, as arrangements for Project Graduation have already been finalized for that evening. Should you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly.
Please see below for important dates relevant to senior students. The most immediate reminder is the mandatory Senior Prom Parent Meeting, scheduled for March 6th at 7:00 PM in the PAC.
Your attendance is required to ensure all necessary information is reviewed. Please mark your calendars and plan accordingly.
NJGPA Parent/Student Letter
Continuing this year, all juniors (except those eligible for the Dynamic Learning Maps assessment) are required to take the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA). State regulations require all students to demonstrate proficiency by achieving a passing score on the English language arts (ELA) and Mathematics components of the NJGPA as a graduation requirement. Students who complete the NJGPA, but do not receive a passing score, will have the opportunity to retake the NJGPA in the following fall, utilize the graduation pathways, or complete a portfolio appeal. In order for students to be eligible to utilize the alternative assessments, students MUST sit for the NJGPA. Additional Graduation assessment requirement information can be found on the NJ Department of Education website. https://www.nj.gov/education/assessment/requirements/.
The New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment will be aligned to New Jersey Student Learning
Standards (NJSLS) for grade 10 English Language Arts, Algebra I, and Geometry. The assessment will be delivered on the same platform students use for the current New Jersey Student Learning Assessments (NJSLA). Parent resources and practice tests can be found at https://nj.mypearsonsupport.com/practice-tests/
The NJGPA will be administered to juniors in our high school and across the state from March 10-March 13. The NJGPA consists of 2 units of mathematics and 2 units of ELA. Each unit is 90 minutes in length and will be administered during the first three periods of the school day. Students should make every effort to arrive on time each day and report directly to their testing location. Students who arrive past the start of the testing time will need to complete a make-up assessment the following week. Testing room locations will be provided via email to the students the week prior to testing. Students are reminded that preparing for the test also includes getting a good night's sleep the night before and eating a healthy breakfast.
Course Selection Process: 2025-26 School Year
It’s time to select courses for the 2025-2026 school year. Secaucus High School offers a variety of courses to match students’ interests and abilities. Course descriptions can be found online in the Program of Studies 2025-2026.
Course Selection Process:
Core academic courses (English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and World Language) are based on students’ current academic performance as well as a variety of assessment data throughout the year.
In March, students will meet with their school counselors to review course requests and recommendations. It is essential that students and parents review the Program of Studies before scheduling appointments to decide on elective course selections.
In April, parents will have the opportunity to review final course requests via the SPSD Parent Portal under the Course Requests tab. Any changes must be requested before the designated deadline by contacting the student’s counselor.
Please keep in mind that these are course requests, not guaranteed placements, and final schedules will be released in June.
Scheduling Details:
Certain courses may have prerequisites as outlined in the Program of Studies.
Course requests are subject to availability, and final schedules will be released in June.
Counselor Meetings (March 2025):
Rising Seniors: 3/3 – 3/7
Rising Juniors: 3/10 – 3/14
Rising Sophomores: 3/17 – 3/21
Rising Freshmen: 3/24 – 3/28
Parents are encouraged to discuss course selections with their children. For any questions, please contact school counselors via email. Your involvement ensures a well-planned academic path for your child.
