Mariner MashUp
October 2024
HOCO Kick-off
Homecoming Week was kicked off with the annual Powder Puff game and the Parade. The afternoon kicked off with the parade through town that included the Homecoming Court and several clubs/athletic teams. We finished the afternoon with a senior (blue) class victory, over the juniors (pink), at East China Stadium. It was a great way to start the week of activities!
MC Student Party Cart
MC Party Cart is on the move, every Tuesday and Thursday Ms. Becker, Mr. Rinehart and Officer Kenyon make their way around the campus popping into classes to hopefully hand out rewards. They look for classrooms with all students on time, all students having materials, and all phones put away. You never know whose room they will pop into next.
National Merit Scholarship
Marine City High School is proud to announce senior David Whitehead was recognized as a Commended Student by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Only 34,000 students throughout the nation are recognized for their excellent academic promise. Commended students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2025 competition by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Congratulations to David for earning such an outstanding honor!
MCHS Represents on the Youth Advisory Council
For the past 30 years, St. Clair County high school students have been positively impacting their communities through the Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Council (YAC).
Consisting of students from high schools around the county, YAC is a group of teenagers who create a positive role model for youth as philanthropists, assess local youth needs and opportunities, review grant applications and advise the Community Foundation on youth grant awards.
The Youth Advisory Council Fund was initially created in 1994 with a $1 million challenge grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation through the Michigan Community Foundations Youth Project. The project encouraged youth development in local communities throughout the state while strengthening community foundation leadership and grant-making capacity.
The YAC has granted more than $1.38 million to youth-related causes over the life of the fund and currently has more than $1.88 million in endowed assets.
Several students said they have learned valuable life skills through their experience with YAC, including problem-solving, social skills, how to work as a part of a group, how to listen and speak up, and how to manage and spend money wisely.
Thank you to Marine City High School student, Senior Emma Terhune, for having an impact in our community.
MCHS Homecoming 2024
Mariner Drama
Mariner Drama presented its first show of the 2023-2024 season, CLUE-THE HIGH SCHOOL EDITION on September 26-28 at the East China Performing Arts Center. The amazing and talented cast and crew presented two public performances to our community and one dress rehearsal performance to our ENTIRE school body. Based on both the popular Parker Brothers Board Game and the 1985 movie, also based on the game, CLUE is a FUNNY murder mystery that gave our students the opportunity to develop distinct and unique characters. Our mega-talented students on the crew put together an IMPRESSIVE Boddy Manor, where the play takes place. Students put this show together in a breath-taking three and a half weeks. Bravo to the CAST and CREW!!
MSBOA Marching Band Festival
Congratulations to the MC Marching Band on their phenomenal performance at MSBOA Marching Band Festival Tuesday night! The performed their best show of the season and earned straight ones for an overall first division rating. Well done MC Marching Band!
Mrs. Bokano's Book "Tasting"
Students in Mrs. Bokano's ELA 9 and ELA 10 classes participated in a book "tasting" before their independent reading unit to help them choose a book to read. The "tasting" allowed them the opportunity to expand their reading habits and look through books of varying genres, styles, and levels. Just like a tasting at a restaurant, students were able to look at a small portion of several books during this tasting event. Once the "tasting" was completed, students were able to lock in their top three choices for a book to read during the unit. This helped students learn how to choose a book that is just right for them and helped them to identify their reading preferences.

Introducing "Mariner Threads"
The Business Education department at MCHS purchased a professional heat press with CTE funding.
Five students in Ms. Gardner's Business Essentials class are in the process of starting a t-shirt business. They named it 'Mariner Threads' and have already created a logo. They are working on a business plan to present to Ms. Becker and Mrs. Gleason, Executive Director of Finance for East China Schools.
This week they met with Kelly Anglin from Attack Sports to learn how to use the heat press and make t-shirts.
Lillian Shink, Amelia Stevens, Taylor Easley, McKenzie Nelson, and Audrena Bearden are doing incredible work and look forward to getting Mariner Threads up and running in the near future.
Thank you to Kelly Anglin and Angie Gleason for taking time to help guide the students in their new venture. Stay tuned for more information.
Mr. McCulloch Builds Relationships
It cannot be all work and NO play at Marine City High School. In Mr. McCulloch's room, we make time to just have some fun, while building community and relationships. On a weekly basis, we just play a partner or team challenge before diving into the heavy ELA work. On Homecoming Friday, we even put away our phones to play card and board games and have actual face-to-face conversations. It was surreal and wonderful.
