A Message from the Principal
Canal View Families,
We have certainly felt a range of emotions this week as we have mourned the loss of a recent Spencerport graduate, Maria Eichas, while trying to continue to move forward with end-of-the-year plans for students. To those who are also mourning this week, please know that our hearts are with you.
This week held many celebrations at school, and I am so grateful to staff members who worked together to ensure that your children felt the joy and togetherness that comes with the end of the school year.
Thank you to our P.E. teachers, Mr. Woodworth and Mr. Gombatto, for planning a wonderful field day! Despite the heat, everyone had a blast. Thank you to our parent volunteers as well!
Another big thank you goes out to our PBIS committee for planning a fantastic end of the year PBIS celebration! We had about 120 parents/guardians in attendance along with our whole building, and it was a very fun and celebratory event. We also had over 100 people livestreaming! If you missed it, check out the link below:
Finally, students thoroughly enjoyed enrichment clusters on Thursday! Students had opportunities to engage in special activities to learn about various topics and to engage with different teachers and students than usual.
It was a whirlwind of a week, and your support is greatly appreciated. Thank you for all you do to partner with us to ensure that your children are well taken care of.
Upcoming dates:
June 14 - Flag Day and Family Picnic (See below for details)
June 18 - Kindergarten End of Year Celebration
June 19 - Juneteenth; No School
June 20 - PreK End of Year Celebration; Grade 5 Moving Up Day
June 21 - Last day of school; Report cards available in Infinite Campus
Warmly,
Denise Lemcke
Principal
Additional Information
What does "Being You" mean for our elementary students?
Many of you know that June is Pride Month. As an elementary principal team, we want to be transparent about our instructional plans to celebrate our community’s diversity.
Each June, we take the opportunity to reinforce the idea that who students are is wonderful and to be celebrated! This year, students will have an opportunity to engage in a project that shows their likes, interests, families, etc. In an effort to celebrate our amazing students, these projects will be on display across all four elementary buildings.
Such celebrations often open us up to misinformation and misunderstanding. We want to assure everyone that no staff members will be asked to teach students about gender, sexuality, or terminology. We believe that our focus should be on a celebration of self, as this is what is developmentally appropriate for our little ones.
With that said, students often share what makes them, or their families, wonderfully diverse. Student-driven conversations about culture, religion, or family structure may naturally arise. We are a wonderful community, and we are excited to continue to celebrate our students and their families.
In short, students will be creating pennants in which they can select images that represent themselves (see the template below). These pennants will also include students' graduation years and will be on display during the graduation parade next week.

Family Picnic - June 14
Come join us for the family picnic on June 14 from 6 - 8pm. Check out this flier for more information.
Additionally, the newly created districtwide parent association, called SEPTA (Special Education PTA), will be partnering with us on this evening. They will run a sensory-friendly room for those students who need a quiet space. Our DJ will also lower the volume of his music for the first 15 minutes of the event to provide an inclusive opportunity for dancing with music that isn't quite so loud.
We are always looking for ways to be more inclusive of all students, so please give us feedback and provide your ideas for future events.
We hope to see you there!
Scholastic Book Fair
Get ready for the book fair! Coming next week on June 13 and 14! Scan the QR code to set up an eWallet if interested.
School Counseling Plan Parent Survey - Action Needed
Annually, as part of the K-12 School Counseling Guidance Plan, we monitor the progress of the plan’s goals by requesting feedback via a short survey. The survey consists of six questions and responses are anonymous.
We ask that you please take a moment to complete the survey by Friday, June 14, 2024 to assist the counseling staff and administrators in evaluating the following goal:
· All stakeholders will be able to identify and communicate with appropriate mental health staff (school counselor, social worker, school psychologist).
We kindly ask that families complete one survey per household. The survey can be accessed here- Parent/Guardian Survey
