CHPS Health Services Information About Norovirus
Norovirus (also known as viral gastroenteritis) causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines. Many people call this the “stomach flu,” although the influenza virus does not cause this illness. Norovirus is most contagious from when symptoms begin for 48-72 hours, although it can still spread for up to two weeks. Infection with Norovirus can be serious, especially for young children, older adults, and the immunocompromised.
Symptoms (usually lasting 1-3 days):
- Watery diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Stomach cramps
How does it spread?
- By eating food or beverages contaminated with stool
- By touching hands, objects, or surfaces contaminated with stool
- When someone vomits and germs get in the air
Prevention:
- Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after using the toilet and changing diapers.
- Hand sanitizer does not kill this virus - soap and water must be used for hand hygiene.
- Wash hands before preparing food or eating (children may need help with proper handwashing).
- Don’t cook for others when sick.
- Clean and disinfect any objects that come into contact with stool. This includes toilets, potty chairs, sinks, toys, and diaper changing areas. Use bleach to disinfect.
If you think your student has Norovirus, call your student’s school nurse. Keep your student home from childcare and school until 24 hours after diarrhea and vomiting have stopped.
Thank you for your assistance in keeping our district safe and healthy!
