Nighthawk News

Principal's Message
Happy Saturday Nighthawks!
As we head into a busy and exciting weekend, we want to take a moment to wish the best of luck to all of our spring sports teams! Our Swim and Dive athletes will be competing at the State Meet, and Girls Lacrosse will be playing for the CIF Championship tomorrow at 5:00 PM at San Dieguito Academy. We encourage all of our families to come out and support our Lady Nighthawks in this exciting opportunity.
We also want to extend a special congratulations to our Nighthawk Badminton team, who finished second in San Diego County at last weekend’s CIF Championships. In only the second year of the program, their success is a testament to their hard work, determination, and team spirit. They represented Del Norte with pride, well done!
At Del Norte, we believe that athletics offer more than just competition, they teach our students about responsibility, perseverance, and the importance of supporting one another. Being part of a team means showing up not just for yourself, but for your teammates, coaches, and school community. These lessons in commitment and integrity carry over into the classroom and beyond.
We also want to recognize and congratulate all students who completed AP testing over the last two weeks. We understand the rigor and pressure that come with these exams. Please remember that self-care is essential, especially during high-stress times. Here are a few simple self-care activities that can help:
- Take a walk or get some fresh air.
Unplug from devices for a while and read something for fun.
Connect with friends or family for a relaxing break.
Get a good night’s sleep and stay hydrated.
Next week is Classified Appreciation Week, and we are so grateful to have one of the most dedicated classified teams in the district. From custodians to clerical staff to instructional assistants and beyond, our classified employees are the heartbeat of Del Norte. They work behind the scenes and on the front lines to ensure our students and staff are supported every single day.
Finally, as the last few weeks of school approach and the weather warms up, we ask that you have a conversation with your student about the importance of meeting all behavioral expectations at Del Norte. This is especially critical for our seniors. Decisions made in these final weeks can significantly impact graduation status and even college admissions.
Thank you for your continued support. Let’s finish the school year strong together.

Prom 2025 - Ride of our Lives!!
Important Information from Administration about Prom - Please Share this Info with your Student.
Tomorrow night the Junior class is excited to present the DNHS 2025 Prom, “Ride of Our Lives!”, at SeaWorld. The doors for the dance will open at 8:00 PM and the dance will end at 11:00 PM. Students will not be allowed in after 9:30 PM unless prior arrangements have been made. If students leave early, they are not permitted back into the dance. We are all very excited, as we anticipate a memorable evening.
Students will have access to one section of the park, the Wild Arctic and Arctic Rescue, and two roller coasters. A large portion of the dance will be held outdoors, please look at the weather forecast for Saturday night. Refreshments, desserts, and activities are included in the price of the ticket. If your student is attending this dance, please review the following with them, as it contains information critical to ensure all students have a safe and enjoyable evening.
Required ID:
Please remember that all students will need to show their Student ID to enter the dance. Please have this ready in line to make for a speedy check in. This can be the physical or electronic student ID. To access the electronic ID, login to the StudentVue app, click on ID Card (linked as an option at the bottom of the screen), swipe right to get to the barcode. Students do not need to bring their ticket; this is a keepsake.
Behavioral Expectations:
As this is a Del Norte event, all PUSD rules of student discipline will be in effect. This goes for all students as well as their guests. One area that we would like to highlight is controlled substances and/or altered states. Upon entry to the dance, students will be randomly screened by a breathalyzer and bags/wallets will be searched. Backpacks and large bags are not permitted into the venue.
Dress Code:
We would like to remind all families that DNHS seeks to maintain a community where high personal standards are reflected in our dress on campus and at all school functions. We thank you in advance for your diligence in helping to maintain these high standards. Additionally, to protect the safety of our students, shoes must be worn at all times and closed toe shoes must be worn on the dance floor. For those students who have concerns with the comfort of their shoes, we strongly recommend bringing an alternate pair of shoes to change into.
Location:
This year’s dance will be held at SeaWorld, 500 SeaWorld Dr., San Diego, CA 92109. Students will enter the park at the main entrance and will follow signage and security to the location of the dance.
Transportation/Parking:
Parking is free starting at 7:00 PM. Please enter the lot through the main gate off SeaWorld Drive. Students enter at the main entrance of the park, from there SeaWorld security and signage will direct students to the appropriate location. We ask all students to arrange to be picked up from the dance by 11:00 PM.
Guests:
As with all DNHS dances, guests will be held to the same high standards as our Del Norte students. Guests must enter the dance with their date and bring a form of ID.
Dancing:
At all school dances we expect a level of decorum and appropriateness. Students will be asked to leave the event if they are found dancing inappropriately or in a manner that may lead to injury. While our staff and hired security take measures to prevent this from occurring, we ask that you discuss this expectation with your student prior to the dance.
After the Dance:
The safety of our students is paramount. While Del Norte does its best to ensure a safe, enjoyable environment for students attending our prom, after dance activities are not school sponsored.
Again, it is our aim to ensure that the DNHS Prom 2025 is safe, enjoyable, and memorable for all students. It is your support and partnership that will help make this an event our students will remember for years to come.

Day Thought for the Nighthawk
Student Op-Ed by Smyan Khurana 10th grade
Did you know that today is National Do Something Good For Your Neighbor Day? Today is the perfect day to remind us that we’re all supporting each other in the Nighthawk Nation. Helping others can make things easier for you too. Even if it’s explaining a concept or supporting your friends by saying “Good Luck” or “You got this” can really make a big difference in not just their mindset, but also their confidence. By supporting others, our own pressure is alleviated, which creates an environment where we can stay focused. As always, there’s more fulfillment in giving than receiving. Enjoy your well-earned weekend Nighthawks!
Digital Citizenship
Protecting personal information is a critical part of helping children build safe and responsible digital habits.
Setting strong privacy controls on apps, devices, and accounts helps safeguard your child’s data and limits unwanted access. It is also important to talk with your child about why privacy matters—helping them understand how to manage their own settings and make thoughtful choices online. By staying informed and setting up privacy protections together, we can teach students to take ownership of their digital safety and build a foundation for lifelong responsible technology use.
What are the best privacy settings for my computer and smartphone?

Volunteer Opportunities
Monterey Ridge/Community Garden Needs Volunteers
The Monterey Ridge Elementary School (MRES) Garden is in need of volunteers who need community service hours. The MRES Garden is part of the 4S Ranch Community Garden and is directly across the street from the school campus.
Who: Volunteer opportunities can be arranged for individual and small groups of students, teams (we once had a good part of the DNHS basketball team help out), Community Service Clubs and organizations, National Honor Society, Student Clubs and other such combinations. We have a long history of working with Del Norte’s NHS and on-campus clubs, students from APES and AP Gov., as well as many students from Poway, Rancho Bernardo, and Mt. Carmel high schools over the years.
In addition, we have worked with many students outside of PUSD who need community service hours for high school and college applications. We have strong connections to local Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops and have provided many service opportunities for troops, as well as sponsoring Silver and Gold Award (Girl Scouts) and Eagle Scout (Scouts) projects over the years.
What: Students and volunteers will work outdoors in the Monarch School/Community Garden. There are a wide range of opportunities in the garden, including, but certainly not limited to: seed planting/transplanting, garden bed care/maintenance, composting, planting pollinator and butterfly plants, sign painting, working with our vermi-composting bin, garden planning and implementation, learning about pesticide free gardening, organization, soil amending and seed saving…. No experience needed!
Where: The MRES 4S Ranch School/Community Garden is located directly across the street from Monterey Ridge Elementary School in 4S Ranch.
Why : The MRES School/Community Garden is a great place for students to volunteer! Students are outside, surrounded by nature, working to keep the gardens growing. Their work is also benefiting families within PUSD who are connected to 4 Community Care for donated food support. Students LOVE being in the garden -- they benefit from hands in the soil, a strong sense of accomplishment, seeing birds, butterflies, caterpillars, and a plethora of living creatures. The garden benefits their mental health tremendously by providing a calm, safe space to take a deep breath and spend time outdoors in nature. (They also learn a lot while they are working!)
Please contact Nicole Moore (Ms. Nicole) at nmoore@powayusd.com or (760) 809-0314 for more information, or to schedule an individual or small group community service/volunteer opportunity.
Homelessness or Housing Insecurity Assistance
Dear Poway Unified School District Families
Poway Unified’s Youth in Transition (YIT) program assists children and youth experiencing homelessness with food, transportation, school supplies, and additional support during the school year. Those students who qualify lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence and includes children and youth who are:
- Sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or a similar reason. This can be doubled (living with one other family) and even tripled (living with two other families) up.
- Living in motels, hotels, due to the lack of alternative adequate accommodations.
- Living in domestic violence shelters, homeless shelters, transitional living programs, housing paid for by programs/vouchers, etc.
- Living in cars, parks, public spaces, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, or similar settings, or in a public or private place not designed for or ordinarily used as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.
- Unaccompanied homeless youth who are living away from the physical custody of a parent or guardian.
- Migratory children who qualify as homeless because they are children who are living in similar circumstances listed above.
If any of the above housing descriptions reflect your current housing situation, please fill out the attached short form and email it to Laura Upson at lupson@powayusd.com. You can learn more information about Youth in Transition here. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
Reminders
Del Norte is a CLOSED campus
Remember, Del Norte’s campus is closed during the school day. All students must remain on campus. This also includes the parking lot and vehicles. You must have an approved off-campus pass from the attendance office to leave campus or off role to leave campus prior to 3:35.
Deliveries
At Del Norte we cannot accept items to be picked up or delivered to students during the instructional day in the front office. Please ensure that your Nighthawk has their lunch, phone, homework, clothing, athletic equipment, computer/Chromebook, books, etc. that they need for school before dropping them off.
Office Hours
Office hours for on-campus instruction at Del Norte occur on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, immediately following the second period. We ask that every student finds an academic location and engage in academic work during this time. Teachers may require students to attend based on their academic performance in class. Office hours provide an opportunity for students to receive extra help from teachers, complete missing assignments, and study for upcoming tests. This time is supplemental to regular instructional hours, and students are strongly encouraged to take advantage of it, especially if they need additional support in any subject.
Attendance
Please review the attendance policy on the DNHS website. It is crucial for you to arrive to class on time every day to not miss important information from your teachers. Traffic is going to continue to be busy for the next few days, allow an extra 10-15 minutes to make it through traffic lights, park, AND walk to class. Detentions for tardies will start on September 19th if you have 6 or more tardies or truancies in the first 3 weeks of starting school. If there are barriers to your student arriving to school on time, please refer them to their counselor or administrator for support.

Parking and Dropping Off
Traffic is extremely heavy the first few weeks of school as we welcome back all our Nighthawks to the Nest. Plan accordingly and drive with extra caution as the community settles in. Please be respectful of each other and our neighbors when parking on side streets around campus. On time attendance to classes is critical to student success, please see that your Nighthawk gets to school on time.
If you will be dropping your student off in the front of the school, use the traffic circle off the main school entrance on Nighthawk Lane. Do not enter the staff lot off Nighthawk Lane. The traffic circle gets congested in the morning and immediately after school, so be cautious and patient when dropping off your student.
ADA Accessible Parking on Campus
Attention Nighthawk Families!
It has been brought to the attention of the Administration Team that some of our ADA compliant parking spaces are being used by individuals that are not legally permitted to use them. In an effort to provide access for all, we ask that you not park in our ADA spots unless you are legally permitted to do so. As a reminder, California Penal Code 22507.8 states that illegally using an ADA parking spot can result in a $421 fine. Thanks for you attention to this matter.
