From Our Data Manager
Dear Scituate School Department Educator –
We are writing to make you aware of a recent cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool, a software vendor which provides our Student Information System (SIS).
On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, PowerSchool informed our leadership team that they experienced a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to certain PowerSchool SIS customer data. Unfortunately, they have confirmed that the information belongs to some of Scituate School Department’s families and educators.
PowerSchool informed us that the taken data primarily includes teacher contact information with data elements such as name and address information. Across their customer base, they have determined that for a portion of individuals, some personally identifiable information (PII), such as social security numbers (SSN), was impacted. They are working with urgency to complete their investigation and determine whether PII belonging to our teachers was included.
Protecting our teachers is something we take seriously. With PowerSchool’s help, more information and resources (including credit monitoring or identity protection services if applicable) will be provided to you as it becomes available.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Sincerely,
Scituate School Department

FAFSA Now Open!
FAFSA is OPEN!
The U.S. Department of Education has released the 2025-26 FAFSA form – 10 days in advance of the agency’s stated goal of December 1. The online FAFSA form is available to all students and families at FAFSA.gov, and the Department is processing submissions and sending them to schools. You can find their announcement here. Students who are planning for life after high school during the 2025-2026 school year are highly encouraged to fill out the form. It is critical to ensure that all students are completing their FAFSA to have a chance at financial support for their postsecondary education plans. Completing the FAFSA is a gateway for not only federal financial aid, but also grants, scholarships, and work-study.
Students and contributors (parents and guardians) will need to create an FSA ID/StudentAid ID prior to filling out the application. The FSA ID is a username and password combination used to log in to the U.S. Department of Education online systems and is used every year when filling out the FAFSA.
Share out this fillable FSA ID/Studentaid.gov account creation guide and worksheet with your students/families
To help communicate the importance of FAFSA, RIDE has created monthly messages for you to share with students and families (including necessary links and directions).
Please refer to the message document here and use the messages each month to keep students and their families informed.
The College Planning Center is a great resource to support FAFSA/FSA ID completion. They also provide a School Counselor Toolkit for the FAFSA check it out here! Look for updates to the FAFSA Dashboard soon!
