Principal's Message
Happy Sunday!
We are now in Week #2 of our 2nd quarter! We're off to a great start! Remember, here at Rancho, showing up to school and participating means students are WELL ON THEIR WAY TO SUCCESS! Just getting up and coming here may be a BIG STEP sometimes--but it's the most important one!!
Red Ribbon Week
This week is Red Ribbon Week! As you know, Red Ribbon Week is a drug and violence prevention awareness campaign that takes place every October. As part of our Red Ribbon Week we'll be having a guest speaker (see the article below) about the dangers of Fentanyl. It's a pretty dramatic and impactful assembly as the speaker's daughter (Alexandra) died as a result of Fentanyl overdose. Both her parents will be present and speaking about this tragedy and encouraging our students to avoid drugs and choose a healthy lifestyle. Please read the article immediately following this "Principal's Message" so you can have an overview of what will be said, and learn about some of the resources we're providing to help students as they hear this difficult but important reminder.
If you have any concerns about this assembly or its impact on your student please let me know!
Also, just a reminder that on Friday, November 1st there will be no classes! This is a professional development day districtwide and staff will be here--but students get the day off!
Have a great week!

'Dangers of Fentanyl' Assembly This Coming Thursday
Dangers of Fentanyl
We'll be having a whole school assembly on October 31st about the dangers of fentanyl. As you know, drug overdoses involving fentanyl have been on the rise for some time. Our goal in having this assembly is to educate our students about this dangerous substance and encourage them to avoid any and all drugs. We want students to know that a drug laced with fentanyl can lead to an overdose which could be fatal.
Our guest speaker will be Matt Capelouto--who has personal experience with this topic (which he's going to share). He is the founder of stopdrughomicide.org He has spoken at TVUSD high schools before during district "Family University" nights. We now get to have him with us right here at RVHS!
For the presentation Mr. Capelouto will begin by showing the film Dead On Arrival, which highlights the dangers of drug use, particularly focusing on fentanyl. After the film, he will discuss the real-life risks and consequences of taking drugs, emphasizing the importance of making healthy choices. He will then share Alexandra's story (his daughter), to help students understand the impact of losing a loved one to drug-related death. Finally, he will introduce Alexandra's Law, explaining the serious legal consequences of selling or furnishing drugs. The session will conclude with an open Q&A for students to ask questions.
We will have our social worker, Yesenia Lopez, at the assembly. She will provide resources for students who may encounter a fentanyl crisis (an overdose) or who need support (for substance abuse). She'll also be on hand afterwards for students who are affected emotionally by the presentation (it is quite impactful). She'll also make herself available to students the next day (Friday, November 1st) by phone or "walk-in visit" even though that Friday is a non-student day (staff will be at school but students have the day off). If students would like to call her or come in to speak with her--Ms. Lopez will be available to them.
We will be having all of our students attend this event, but if for some reason you would like for your student not to attend, please let us know!
Ethnic Studies Parent Input Night on Oct. 30th
In 2021, California passed Assembly Bill 101, making a one-semester course in Ethnic Studies a graduation requirement for all California students starting with the class of 2030. This class must be in place by the 25-26 school year.
TVUSD invites students, staff, and parents to the TVHS Multipurpose Room to provide valuable input as we develop our Ethnic Studies Curriculum. Help shape the future of education in TVUSD by sharing your thoughts and ideas!

Happy Halloween on Thursday Oct. 31st
Halloween Costume Guidelines
Here are a few guidelines for students that are common over the entire district as students choose to dress up (or not) for Halloween:
1--No masks
2--No full face painting
3--No look-alike weapons (plastic swords/knives/guns, etc.)
4--All costumes must be school appropriate as per the district dress code
Purchase Your Boo Keychain- $3 each cash only!!
Place Your ID Card 2-3 Inches from the Video Doorbell Camera--AND HOLD!
Video Doorbell Update
The district's intent on having the new video doorbell system is to make the school a safer place! And that's what we hope, too!! I know that at times it can be a bit of a challenge--since holding your ID Card up and waiting for us to buzz you in isn't as straightforward as just walking in the front door and going where you need to go!!
As we've implemented the new system we've also discovered a few problems with it (and we're working them).
One such problem is that there is a significant time lag between what we're seeing on our screens (as we watch on our device as you walk up to the video doorbell) and where you actually are 'in real time'. Said another way, when you're RIGHT AT THE VIDEO DOORBELL SHOWING US YOUR ID CARD, our monitors are still showing you about 15 feet away walking towards the doorbell! There's about a 5-6 second time lag! (See the picture below and what that looks like!)
So...while you've been standing there at the doorbell for 5-6 seconds showing us your ID Card, we haven't been actually seeing it!!! That has caused some frustration as it appears that we're taking a long time to let you in!! And by the time we FINALLY DO SEE YOU AND YOUR CARD, many people have already started to put it away!! And then we have to ask you to put it back up to the screen!!
To make sure that we can clearly see your ID CARD and (taking into account the video time lag) please help us by doing the following:
Please...
a) hold your ID card 2-3 inches from the screen
b) hold it steady so we can see it
c) Remember that there's a time lag...Hold the card there until you hear us buzz you in!
Also, if you're coming in as a group, or with a group who just happen to be coming into the school at the same time, we'd ask that we be able to verify everyone's ID with the doorbell camera before buzzing you in. When we've seen everyone's ID, we'll buzz all of you in together!
Thanks for your patience as we work out the bugs in our new video doorbell system!
REMINDER ALL STUDENTS NEED A SCHOOL ID
Students PLEASE take a picture of your Student ID with your cell phone!
This is so you will always have a copy in case you forget to bring it!
Students: If you come to the front door of the school and don't have a school ID, we'll be asking for you to get one as soon as you enter the school! It only takes a few minutes!! That will make it easier each time you need to be "buzzed in" through the video doorbell system!
