Farewell, Class of 2028!
As we close out the 2023-2024 school year, the staff at Ordean would like to say a fond farewell to our 8th graders, the class of 2028. They have been a fantastic group of young people and they are leaving us with countless memories of learning, laughter, and connection. We wish them the absolute best of luck as they transition into high school. Please keep in touch and let us see all that you continue to accomplish in your future. We will miss you!
OEMS PTA
THANK YOU OEMS FAMILIES
The BARK auction items flew off the shelves and we are so thankful for all of the generous donations that made it possible.
Another huge thank you to all of the parents who came to help out during our festivities on the last day of school. We had a short bout of rain right at the end, but most everyone was able to get back outside by the end. Our school community is stronger when families are a part of it. Many thanks to Betsy Schwartz for coordinating all of our volunteers and for setting up the BARK auction sign-up. We couldn't have done it without you!
OEMS student wins writing contest
An OEMS student from Mr. Froehlingsdorf's 6th Grade science class, Brin Tellinghuisen, won the Ray Skelton River Quest Essay Writing Contest 2024!
Ray Skelton was one of the founders of the St. Louis River Quest in the Port of Duluth-Superior. Ray began his career as a sailor in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service in 1961 serving in the Pacific Fleet. In 1964, Ray became a merchant mariner on the Great Lakes and rose through the ranks from seaman to captain. He earned his first-class pilotโs license in 1972 and his masterโs license in 1976. Throughout his life, Ray was dedicated to the Great Lakes and the maritime industry, ending his career at the Duluth Seaway Port Authority.
Ray shared his passion for Lake Superior and the St. Louis River with friends, colleagues, and community members alike until his death on October 13, 2006. River Quest continues to honor Captain Ray Skeltonโs commitment to stewardship by naming the River Quest Writing Contest after him. Congratulations, Brin!

If you or your child were able to snap some photos of the fun and you're willing to share them, please send them to Kristin Paschen @ kristin.paschen@isd709.org. We are keeping a folder so we can remember the day!

Tribal Members Highlighted in Virtual Event
Boozhoo (Hello),
The 7th Annual Growing Resilient Communities Gathering of Collaboratives and Tribal Nations will be held next month, on Tuesday, June 18th from 9:00 a.m. โ 2:30 p.m.
This free, virtual event supports tribal community members and partners and Childrenโs Mental Health and Family Services Collaboratives as they work to reduce ACEs, strengthen core protective systems, and create self-healing communities across Minnesota. This yearโs event will focus on Locally Grown Changemakers. This event is being planned and hosted by FamilyWise Services, with support from the Minnesota Department of Human Services and the Center for Prevention at BlueCross and BlueShield of Minnesota.
This year, we plan to celebrate, highlight, and elevate the stories of changemakers across Minnesota who are engaging in community-based efforts that are focused on creating more inclusive and equitable practices, cultural norms, and concrete supports so all children, families, and adults can thrive. Changemakers are individuals, groups, programs, initiatives, or coalitions improving the health and wellbeing of their community members, and we hope their stories will inspire you with new ideas that you can take back to your community.
The Conference Program provides a more comprehensive overview of the Changemakers who will be speaking this year.
We invite you to register today.
