Four Greenwich High School Seniors Named Among Top 300 Regeneron Science Award Winners
The Regeneron Science Talent Search scholars were selected from 1,993 applications received from 659 high schools across 49 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam and eight countries. According to the competition program, “Scholars were chosen based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists and hail from 192 American and international high schools in 39 states and Guam.” All scholars will be awarded $2,000.

- Cynthia Chen, Project Title: A Green Nanotechnological Approach for Energy Efficiency and Conservation: Tungsten-doped Vanadium Dioxide Thermochromic Smart Windows
- Hiba Hussain, Project Title: Non-invasive, Low-Cost Diagnosis of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) via Smartphone Breath Analysis
- Raina Jain, Project Title: Control of Varroa destructor Infestation with a Dual-Function Thymol Emitting Honey Bee Hive Entranceway
- Justin Speaker, Project Title: Design of a Riboflavin-Enhanced Ultraviolet Contact Lens Disinfection System
Greenwich High School Science Teacher and Research Advisor, Mr. Andrew Bramante said, “Each of these students’ work represents an incredible innovation in their area of interest, whether it be energy conservation, environmental management, or medicine, at the level that is at or equal to university level work. Each has originated their idea, designed all aspects of the research, and conducted the entirety of their work, independently, here at Greenwich High School. Their new devices and techniques have the ability to change the landscape of our energy dependence, medical care, and will save our food resources, through protection of our much needed-pollinators. I applaud these four students who were named scholars, and continue to be proud of the hard work of all of our research students, who are truly developing innovative solutions to real-world problems. These students are passionate, hardworking and deserving of this recognition.”
SUMMERFARE 2020 comes to GHS on January 22
Save the date! On January 22, 2020, the Greenwich High School PTA will sponsor its annual "SUMMERFARE" in the GHS Student Center from 6:00 - 8:00pm. It's an event that focuses on summer activities, camps, and employment for kids and teens. The event will draw close to 100 vendors and last year nearly 500 community members attended. The event will have a wealth of information for students and families, and all are encouraged to attend!
January Menus & Other Food Service Updates
Additionally, the Food Services Team is focusing on:
- Transitioning away from all processed pre-cooked chicken products and moving towards preparing fresh.
- Producing fresh muffins and pizza with a variety of toppings in the High School Bake Shop.
- Working on a self-serve Healthy Snack Initiative with displays at the GHS cash registers.
- Launching a pre-ordered Gluten-Free menu program for Celiac students (with a variety of Gluten-free options, at the same cost as lunch menu items).
- Building upon our Allergy protocols and expanding our web-page product and recipe lists.
Curriculum Forum: January 22, 6:30PM
Please join the Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones, Chief Academic Officer Irene Parisi and all Curriculum Coordinators 6:30PM on January 22, 2020 at Eastern Middle School for a Curriculum Forum.
The Curriculum Forum will include information from staff on the parent resources available on the Greenwich Schools website, a basic introduction to Fundations, and a focus on parent and community questions and answers.
Key2Ed IEP Facilitation Workshop: January 13, 2020
On January 13, 2020, GPS parents and guardians are invited to attend an IEP Facilitation Workshop, led by Key2Ed. Please use this site to register to attend the evening workshop. The session will begin at 5:30pm at Cos Cob Elementary School and end at 8:00pm. Pizza and salad will be available at 5:00pm and childcare will be available for participants who pre-register their children. A Spanish translator will be available if needed. As GPS continues to focus on collaboration and partnership with our Special Education families, there are techniques that we can utilize to enhance collaboration and strengthen our partnership in the PPT process. As such, the first initiative for our Special Education Review is a refresher on the IEP process. Key2Ed, Inc. has become the national authority on IEP meeting facilitation through a long history of working across multiple stakeholders to improve the process. When special education was developed and implemented in public schools, the process for these types of meetings was not yet designed or implemented. This often resulted in lack of communication, collaboration, and efficiency within IEP (PPT) teams with less-than optimal effect on students with special needs. In 1997, the founders of Key2Ed addressed this issue after spending their professional lives in special education and recognizing the need for a process.
Projects Update
GHS Soil Remediation
An overview of the Phase I Remedial Action Plan for GHS has been posted to the GPS website. Additional documentation on the ongoing GHS Soil Remediation project is also available for viewing on the website. Additionally, on January 15, 2020 at Central Middle School at 6:00 p.m. the public can learn more about the plan and offer comments in person. The session will begin with a brief presentation and then will open for public comment.
Cardinal Stadium Project
On Tuesday, January 7, the Board of Education hosted a Special Meeting for the Cardinal Stadium Project to hear public comments on the proposed plans. The information shared at the meeting included details of the proposed updates to the stadium.
