Superintendent Community Update
September 13, 2024
Superintendent's Message
Dear JUHSD Community,
Last year, we began our three year District Redesign effort with the National Equity Project (NEP) and as such, we put quite a bit of effort into hearing from students. Our Equity Design Team is made up of Deputy Superintendent Kareen Baca, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion & Ethnic Studies TOSA, Dan Arzaga, Instructional Coaches Jessica Tiatia and Josh Fetherston. This week, we attended an inspiring Network Retreat designed to support us in our focus on building collective investment, commitment, shared language, and skill across the district that will sustain our equity focus indefinitely.
Here are some key takeaways from the week:
- Fostering Learning Communities: We engaged in meaningful connections, leveraging each other's expertise to drive our equity goals forward.
- Forging Deep Connections: We focused on deepening role-specific relationships, setting the stage for ongoing leadership development.
- Finding Inspiration: The conference highlighted powerful leadership stories, sparking new ideas and motivation for us all.
- Embracing Transformation: We reflected on practices, courageously challenging our own identities and adopting new, equity-focused approaches.
- Enhancing Collaboration: We explored strategies for working collaboratively with each other and the broader community, emphasizing respect, joy, and liberation in our interactions.
I am so grateful to our team and we are all looking forward to bringing what we have learned back to our district!
Have a great weekend and remember that my door is always open!
Warm regards,
Toni Presta

Attendance Awareness Month
Let's make this year a success for your child! Studies show that regular attendance is crucial for academic and life success. Here are some tips to keep your child on track:
Prioritize attendance: Make sure your child is in school every day.
Address health issues: Work with your child's doctor to minimize absences.
Partner with the school: Stay involved and communicate regularly.
Remember: Chronic absence – missing just two days a month – can have a significant impact. Let's work together to ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive! Learn more on Attendance Works' website at www.attendanceworks.org.

Exercise Extreme Caution: Be particularly careful when opening emails, especially if they contain unexpected attachments or suspicious links.
Avoid Clicking: Do not click on links or open attachments from emails that seem suspicious or are from unfamiliar senders.
Verify Unusual Requests: If you receive an email that appears to come from a known contact but seems unusual or out of character, verify its authenticity by reaching out to the sender directly using a trusted phone number or by meeting them in person.
Report Suspicious Activity: Notify your school site administration immediately if you encounter any suspicious emails or texts.
Our Technology Department is actively working to prevent scam emails and texts by employing firewalls and other security measures. Your vigilance plays a crucial role in keeping our community safe.
