Lambs Ledger
October Edition
Dear Lambs Elementary Families,
As we welcome the beautiful month of October, we are excited about the many learning experiences and events planned for our students. Please check out the upcoming events flyer below! Fall is in the air, and with it comes an opportunity to reflect on all that we have accomplished and look forward to the fun and growth still ahead.
October - Attendance Isn't a Trick, it's a Treat!
Consistent attendance is one of the most essential factors for academic success. Every day, our teachers work hard to deliver lessons that build upon each other, helping students to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. When students miss school frequently, it creates gaps in their learning that can be difficult to overcome.
What is Chronic Absenteeism?
Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, which amounts to approximately 18 days or more, whether those absences are excused or unexcused. While it may not seem like much, even just 2 days a month can add up quickly, leading to students falling behind.
Excused absences (illness, medical appointments, etc.) are understandable, but they still count toward chronic absenteeism. Please send in a handwritten note or signed note with your child within three days of the absence.
Unexcused absences (missing school without a valid reason) can also contribute to significant learning loss.
What is Truancy?
Truancy refers to unexcused absences that occur without the knowledge or permission of the school. In South Carolina, truancy is defined as:
3 consecutive unexcused absences, or
A total of 5 unexcused absences during the school year.
We understand realistically that there will be times when your child needs to stay home due to illness or other family circumstances. However, it’s important to be mindful of how often these absences occur.
Final Thoughts
Every family’s situation is unique, and we are here to help. If you are facing challenges with your child’s attendance, please reach out to us. We can work together to find solutions! This month we will be celebrating student attendance in three ways. See the flyer below for more information!
We are committed to ensuring that all of our students have the opportunity to succeed, and regular school attendance plays a major role in that success. We appreciate your partnership in helping us create a positive and productive learning environment for your child. If you have any questions or need support regarding your child’s attendance, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office. Together, we can help your child reach their fullest potential.
