On Thursday 26th June, I was fortunate enough to attend the Māori Achievement Collaborative Regional Hui held at Pai O Hauraki Marae, Paeroa. Mrs Meyler and Whaea Adreena were also in attendance. Together we built relationships and connections with other educators who had travelled from as far as the King Country and Mercury Bay. Our focus for the day was unpacking ‘Te Whare Tapu O Te Ngakau Māori’ a new framework to guide our (MAC) learning.

Thank you to everyone who came and enjoyed a hearty breakfast together on a cold Te Aroha Monday morning. It warms our hearts to see our school community come together like this and celebrate our students, as they showcase their learnings about Matariki. Congratulations to Connor Wood and Braxton House who are the recipients of this year's Manaakitanga Award. This is awarded to a senior and junior student who display care, compassion, respect and cooperation. This award is chosen by peers and is therefore even more sought after and something to be especially proud of.

As a school, we are very proud to celebrate these wonderful attributes in two of our fine young men.

Over the final week of Term 2 and first week of Term 3 a strong group of Year 7/8 students battled it out in order to win the prestigious Stanley Avenue Girl and Boy Tennis Cups. We were fortunate enough to be able to practise and play our competition games at the Te Aroha Turf Tennis Courts. Student’s played in a round robin format, as well as learning the art of umpiring along the way. In a hard fought Boys final Xavier Van Kuijk emerged victorious over Charlie Knight. In the girls division Palace Newton took the spoils with victory over Ariana Parker. All students are to be credited for the way their tennis skills improved throughout the tournament along with their sportsmanship.

We would like to thank the Te Aroha Tennis Club for allowing us to use their courts. This was greatly appreciated by all.

Room 13 and Room 9 enjoyed their Tuakana Teina on Friday last week, to celebrate Matariki. The children started with decorating cookie stars, with the older students assisting the younger students. We then sang some waiata together. We finished our time together working in pairs to do Ti Rakau - a Maori waiata game. The children all enjoyed this time together and look forward to another time when they can spend more time learning from each other.

We will be holding our School Cross Country on Tuesday August 8th (postponement day August 15th) This will be held at Boyd Park from 1.00pm onwards. We expect to finish at approximately 2.50pm.

We encourage all children to wear Waka colours, so it would be wonderful if students could bring a t-shirt to change in to at lunchtime.

Here is a tip on how to communicate with your child’s teacher on HERO

Open up the app and click on the arrow beside the child that you want to communicate about and then click on Caregiver Communication on the list that dropped down.

If you send a message the student’s teacher will receive it and can reply to you. This sits in HERO then for us to go back to if needed and makes it super simple for you to contact their teacher.

Room 9 has had 12 new faces join us from Room 11. So as a fun way to get to know each other, students shared their favourite things with Miss Griffin. Together they created acrostic poems using their names and then drew them selves using pencil, colouring pencils and pastels. Great Job Room 9!

We feel moving forward this is a great option and will save a lot of time issuing and collecting sports shirts.
