Message from Mr. McDermott
Next week is exam week and the end of first semester. Please encourage your students to study and prepare for their exams. Remember, freshmen will now have their first high school GPA. Please make sure you are checking grades regularly. Administrators are also sending out warnings at progress reports and prior to the end of the quarter to students who are in danger of failing. Our goal is to help all students graduate and meet their individual goals. Please reach out to us if you need assistance.

Each student takes six courses per semester. To calculate gpa, you divide quality points/6.
For college admission and scholarships, weighted gpa is sometimes used. Honors courses carry an extra .5 weighting and AP/DE courses carry an extra 1.0 weighting.

Florida Civic Literacy Examination
The state has required a new test called the Florida Civic Literacy Examination (FCLE). This test is required of students (typically seniors) enrolled in certain U.S. Government courses and will be required of college students as well. Beginning with students initially entering a Florida College System institution or state university in the 2021-2022 school year and thereafter, each student must demonstrate competency in civic literacy by achieving a passing score on an assessment and by successfully completing a civic literacy course. The Florida Civic Literacy Examination (FCLE) is the assessment used to meet this requirement. If a student passes this assessment while in high school, they are exempt from the postsecondary exam requirement.
In conclusion, those students taking U.S. Government this semester will be taking this exam on December 10th. It is an 80 minute test, but the students may take up to half the school day.
