SHMS Family Newsletter
October 6, 2024
Principal's Message
Greetings SHMS Community!
This week may be short at Stuart-Hobson with students in school Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but we have two important events. First, we are excited to welcome families to our first of two Parent-Teacher Conferences sessions for this term on Tuesday, October 8, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. If your student is not yet succeeding across the board there is still time for you to schedule a meeting with their teachers for the October 8th and/or 16th parent-teacher conferences. Families have the choice of joining conferences in-person at Stuart-Hobson or via a virtual meeting link that will be shared before the upcoming conference dates. On Tuesday, families who are participating in in-person conferences will enter through the main entrance at 410 E Street NE, where members of the leadership team will handle check-in and direct them to their conferences. Leadership team members will also be available to answer questions and provide support as needed throughout the evening.
For families participating virtually, notifications have been sent to access the conference meetings. Families needing support with online access should reach out to the main office at stuart-hobsonms@k12.dc.gov or at 202-671-6010.
Second, we are holding our first school-wide attendance incentive event on Wednesday. Stuart-Hobson students have done an outstanding job of showing up each day ready to engage, with over 340 students maintaining a 95% or higher in-seat attendance rate so far this year! Our attendance team continues to send daily emails to families of students with one or more unexcused absences to ensure data accuracy. We appreciate our families' strong engagement in these communications, which has allowed us to update attendance records and identify gaps in our data procedures.
Stuart-Hobson offers multiple attendance incentives throughout the school year, so if a student didn’t meet the criteria this time, they will have other opportunities to participate and be recognized for growth and excellence.
Remember, you can always contact the front office at 202-671-6010 or email me directly at eric.fraser@k12.dc.gov for any other questions or needs.
Warm regards,
Eric Fraser
Principal

New Information and Important Updates
Stuart-Hobson's Music and Band Director Featured in Washington City Paper!
Mr. BJ Simmons, our talented music and band director, was recently featured in the Washington City Paper for his impressive musical journey and contributions to the D.C. jazz scene. Known for his versatility across genres, Simmons has played alongside notable artists like Andre Agassi, Wale, and Harvey Mason, yet he remains deeply committed to his work as an educator at Stuart-Hobson Middle School.
Despite his international success, including performances in Bahrain and work as a producer in Los Angeles, Simmons continues to focus on sharing his love for music with students. His recent re-release of two jazz albums, Acronyms and We Wear the Mask, underscores his commitment to musical excellence. We are truly fortunate to have a musician of his caliber guiding our students, inspiring them through his diverse experiences and passion for jazz

Save the Date - 2024 Renovators House Tour - October 20, Buy your Tickets Today!
The 2024 Renovators House Tour will be held on Sunday, October 20, from 12:00 to 5:00 PM. All proceeds benefit the Capitol Hill Cluster School, a public school in Washington, D.C. This event began in 2001 when three Capitol Hill mothers, looking for a way to support their children’s public school, came up with the idea of showcasing renovated homes in their historic neighborhood. Their goal was to highlight stories of transformation and change, and since its inception, more than 4,500 people have participated in the tour, raising over $200,000 for the school. These funds have supported essential initiatives, from new classroom technology to arts programs.
Each year, generous homeowners in the community open their doors, sharing their unique renovation stories. The tour never repeats the same renovation, offering fresh inspiration and ideas for those considering their own home projects. It’s also a wonderful way to spend a Sunday exploring Capitol Hill, enjoying beautifully transformed homes, and supporting a local public school’s growth.
Visit https://www.renovatorstour.org/about for more information and to purchase tickets.
