How Can We Grow Healthy Kids...Artistically?
This week, our Art Show is Tuesday from 5:00-7:00 and our fourth graders' "Broadway Night" Music Program is 6:00 PM on Thursday. I think it is so important for our children to be physically active to keep their bodies functioning well. It is just as important for them to have creative outlets to renew their minds and emotions. These activities provide fuel and energy to accomplish the work of learning at school. (The same is true for the big people as well.) How can we help our kids develop their artistic selves? 1. Provide lots of opportunities. While there is not one clear definition of art, it is generally accepted that there are seven main forms of it: painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, music, theater and cinema. (See https://proactivecreative.com/different-types-of-art/) Our children can easily connect with one of these areas or expand into others. Some argue that cooking, gardening, wood working, and other hobbies could be art. I would not be one to argue that. The goal is to help our kids find artistic endeavors that they can enjoy. We never know what passion may be ignited by a visit to a museum or performance or workshop. Summer camps are another great way for kids to sample potential interests. These kinds of opportunities also build an appreciation for various art forms. 2. Look, listen and learn. Observe what our kids are doing. Children naturally gravitate to those things they enjoy. When given free time, what do our little ones do without our guidance? Do they pull out the blocks or do they draw or do they act out their plays or do they turn up the music and dance? There's no wrong answer here. Sometimes we need to help them see what they really enjoy even if that is different from their friends and family. 3. Go slow before going deep. Our kids may bring home a drawing from school and we think they are ready for additional art classes. Or, they could hum a little tune and we think we should call a voice teacher. A passing interest by a child may not be an indicator of a lifelong passion. Let your child be the guide to determine if he or she wants to take a next step in joining a theater group or starting guitar lessons. In addition, it is quite possible that kids may shift their interest in an art form from one year to the next as they discover what they like or don't like. 4. Keep it all in perspective. Just because our child develops an affinity for a certain activity, that does not mean we have to go "all in." There is only so much time in our busy schedules. Usually, in order to say "Yes" to one thing, we have to say "No" to something else. The opportunity costs are not just financial. Family and parental time and energy can easily be depleted in order for a child to participate in their art. Beyond that, their learning at school should not take a back seat. (Yes, you know the principal would say that.) As adults, we need to provide guidance for our children on how much is too much.
We never know if we have the next Oscar or Grammy or Pulitzer award winner in our home. We might. For most of our children, we simply want them to find activities that help them fill their creative tanks that they can enjoy for a lifetime. We desire for them to "re-create" so they can be the best version of themselves and become better learners. Let's do what is reasonable and appropriate in helping them develop as an artist.
Strength and Blessings,
Mr. Maness
