Superintendent Message - Oct. 1-4
SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE
Inspired by Christ on a Journey to Encounter, Nurture, and Serve.
Inspiré par Dieu dans une Aventure à Découvrir, Grandir, et Servir.
October 1 - 4, 2024
Good morning,
October marks the end of summer and the beginning of the fall season. As we step into October, we are embraced by the blessings of change and renewal. This month brings the gentle reminder that transformation is part of life, like the vibrant autumn leaves falling from the trees. October invites us to reflect on the year’s journey, to be grateful for every lesson, and to prepare our hearts for the blessings still to come.
At the close of September, we gathered in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day serves as a poignant reminder to reflect on the enduring impact of residential schools and to honour the strength and resilience of Indigenous peoples. It calls us to actively listen, seek understanding, and to acknowledge our shared history—knowing that each of us has a role to play in fostering healing and reconciliation.
Last week, we concluded our Listening Circle sessions within school communities and departments. We are deeply grateful for this meaningful practice, borrowed from Indigenous traditions, that allows us to come together in a spirit of respect and openness. Trustees involved in the Listening Circles will now meet to draw out the themes that have emerged from the rich conversations we shared.
Looking ahead, we are filled with anticipation as we prepare to celebrate Catholic Education Week from October 19 to October 25, 2024—a date change from last year. The theme, "Testify! Share the Reason for Your Hope," draws inspiration from 1 Peter 3:15 and invites us to live out our faith boldly, to share it with others, and to build a community rooted in hope, unity, and love.
As we journey through this month, may it fill your heart with peace, hope, and the quiet joy that comes from life’s many blessings.
Kathleen Finnigan, Superintendent
On September 25, students in Grades 4-6 from St. Teresa of Avila School and Glendale Sciences and Technology School took part in a critical safety awareness event organized by the Parkland Regional Safety Committee. Held in the parking lot of St. Teresa of Avila School, the event featured a hands-on demonstration of a simulated vehicle collision involving a distracted student, with local emergency services professionals responding to the scene. Throughout the event, Red Deer emergency services highlighted the importance of alertness and making responsible safety choices.
Students also explored the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), with both child and adult PPE being showcased. During the PPE fashion show, the emcee emphasized how wearing proper protective gear can prevent serious injuries. The event aimed to encourage students to make safety a regular practice in all areas of their lives by equipping them with practical knowledge and fostering positive habits for personal and community safety.
