Welcome to the Gullett Library

On February 27th, our 3rd-5th graders had the pleasure of spending the morning with best selling author (and our country's one-time leading expert on the capybara) Stuart Gibbs. His presentations were entertaining, enlightening, and inspiring!

On January 22, our students in Kindergarten through Third Grade got to meet Greg Foley and learn about the creation of his new graphic novel, Dex Dingo - Worlds Best Greatest Ever Inventor.

Later this spring, we will once again be partnering with our amazing local book store, Black Pearl Books, for an in-store book fair benefitting the Gullett library program. Keep an eye out here for more details and dates.

I am so happy that Gullett's theme this year is "Grow Your Story," and I sincerely believe that our library program helps equip our students to do just that. Here in the library, we explore our interests, learn about the world around us, and evaluate new ideas and multiple perspectives - all things we use to understand ourselves better and grow our own stories.

Here are some of the ways that is done in the library:

• Checking out library books: Giving children the autonomy to self-select what they read is a powerful thing. The library provides literature and resources that help students explore personal interests and new ideas, and gives them a chance to read just for the shear joy of it.

• Story Time: During class library visits, I love to share my enthusiasm for reading and learning through interactive storytelling, read-alouds and library lessons. We explore a wide variety of genres and topics throughout the year.

• Special Programs: Author visits, Book Fairs, and programs like Birthday Books are just some of the ways we celebrate and build excitement for literature and reading.

• Kindergarten and 1st Grade check out one book each week. It's up to the teacher's discretion whether the books go home or stay in the classroom for the week (Kindergarteners usually keep their books at school).
• 2nd-5th Grade generally check out two books at a time (with wiggle room depending on the reader).
• Checkout period is 2 weeks. After that, the book is considered overdue and the student can't check out again until the late book is returned (or they talk to me about it). And, of course, they can renew a book if they need extra time to finish it.
• Please designate a safe place for library books at home. That way, your child will always know where to find their book and it's away from hazards such as little siblings, pets, and food/drink.
  
• I know that accidents happen and books can get lost or damaged, but if this happens, there is a standard fee of $20 per lost/damaged book.

The Library LOVES volunteers, and there are many ways (large and small) that you can help. The Library Committee will be sending out more detailed information on Konstella about getting involved, so keep your eyes peeled!
