Mrs. Adams: November PBIS Assembly
This week we had our monthly grade-level assemblies and recognized students for a variety of reasons. First, we celebrated our October Mid-Knights of the Month. Congratulations Braydan Brenton, Gianna Libby, Annabelle Whitten, JP Aponte., Calliope Valliere, and Bryce Simpson. These students were selected for their growth mindsets, hard work, leadership, kindness, and success in the classroom. Above all, they embody our school code, Take Care of Yourself, Take Care of Each Other, and Take Care of this Place.
The second group of students we recognized were those who were on the Maine Through the Year Honor Roll. These students met their growth goals for both reading and math on this fall's State Assessment. Congratulations to 8th-grade students Ezrah Amaral, Lucy Bissonnette, Alexander Black, Zoey Burhoe, Elliot Colon, Isabella Comeau, Allie Cort, Adrian Cottle, Annabelle D’Auteuil, Michael Dadiego, Lauren Fuller, Benjamin Gagnon, Jackson Garcia, Lauren Heath, Ava Hebert, Brady Jandreau, Edward Johnston, Luke Lombardi, Jaxon Luce, Brayden MacDonald, Mackenzie Ouellette, Aiden Penfold, Aiden Perrino, Lilah Pittman, Colin Riggins, Jacob Robbins, Sidney Russell, Brennan Ryan, Ethan Sewell, Joshua Varney, Owen Wallingford, Liam Whitney and 7th-grade students Ellie Arsenault, Addison Carlton, Liam Colbath, Dylan Edwards, Owen Chadbourne, Simon Harmon, Lea Marchesseault, Kristyn Purdy, Paisley Rhodes, Marley Simpson, Junia Trussoni, Wyatte Veilleux, Myles Willer.
Finally, we recognized 119 students who had perfect attendance for October. A big congratulations goes to Mrs. Shanning and Mrs. Carmody's round table which had an impressive 69% of their students with 100% attendance for the month. As a school, our goal is to maintain at least 95% attendance; unfortunately, it seemed we could not escape all the illnesses going around in October and we averaged 92.52%. Thank you for encouraging your students to engage in healthy habits and for supporting regular attendance when they are healthy enough to be in school.
Tri-Town Family 5K
It was great to have so many students and families participating and cheering for each other. Community is the essential element of this event. This race is built on the generosity of outstanding local sponsors and the kindness of willing volunteers. They were awesome again this year.
This year's top Whittier Middle School male finisher was Jackson Garcia (20:17), who finished third overall. Eighth grader Allie Cort (31:10) set the pace for Whittier females.
Overall, the first across the line was repeat winner Kyle Simmons (19:06). He was followed by Poland Regional High School's Riley Lamb (20:15).
The first female finisher was PRHS's Mackenzie Lane (24:55). The second female was Kelly Harmon (26:19).
We love seeing the high school students come back and being part of the 5K. Please consider joining us in 2025 for Year 14!
Mrs. Yorkey: Grade 8 Wellness
As part of the mental and emotional health unit, wellness students will participate in a lesson on suicide prevention. The main purpose is to: understand depression and anxiety, provide suicide prevention information, and learn how to help a friend they may be worried about. We will encourage your child to discuss this lesson with you, and share insights and coping devices that work for both adults and students or youth. If you have any concerns about these lessons/topics and how they impact your teen during these lessons, please contact me at kyorkey@rsu16.org or jmartin@rsu16.org or call 207-998-3462 ext. 329.
If you have questions or want to learn more about youth suicide and how you may help your child or others, please visit www.maine.gov/suicide and check For Parents section.

Student Council Food Drive
Student Council is sponsoring a November Fall/Thanksgiving themed Food Drive. Roundtables will earn points for non-expired, non-perishable foods, and monetary donations, which will be applied toward their December Spirit Week points. Roundtable teachers can start collecting food and monetary donations on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. The Food Drive will run until Thursday, November 21, 2024, when student council representatives will collect all food and monetary donations from roundtable teachers. At the November 21st student council meeting (after school from 2:15 - 3:30), representatives will tally points and load Ms. Adler's car with donations for delivery to a local organization. We appreciate your help. Please let Ms. Adler know if you have any questions: kadler@rsu16.org.

Whittier Students Learn about Aviation Careers
Ben Wight, Corporate Pilot, met with Whittier students to answer questions about careers in aviation. The meeting was prompted by 8th grade student Zach Bartlett who invited Ben for this interview as part of a GaTE career research project.
Ben attended Whittier Middle School and graduated from Poland High School in 2016. Thank you Ben!
Ms. Adler: Student Council Dance
Wow! I cannot thank you all enough. What an incredible night. I am proud of our dedicated student council representatives who continually show up to meetings and those who helped set up, organize, and clean up after the dance. You are all amazing! I am also proud of all of the students who attended tonight’s dance! Not to be overlooked, I’m grateful to all of our chaperones (Mr. Vincent, Mrs. Adams, Ms. Allocco, Mrs. Lachapelle, Mrs. Swenson, Mrs. Martin, Mr. Jones, Mrs. Gilbert, Mrs. Shanning, and Ms. Carmody), as without you all, we could not have pulled off such a successful evening. Thank you! Enjoy your long weekend!
