Principal's Message
Dear West TV Families,
Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year!
This is my 6th year as principal at West TV. Prior to serving as principal at West TV, I served as principal at Errol Hassell Elementary School in the Beaverton School District and as assistant principal at Meadow Park Middle School in the Beaverton School District.
I’ve lived in Beaverton for 24 years and I’m a native Oregonian - born and raised in Corvallis. My parents met in college while attending OSU and just celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary this month. My two sisters and I also graduated from OSU - go Beavs! Before coming to work in the Beaverton School District as an administrator, I was a teacher in the Portland School District.
When I’m not working at the school, I enjoy reading and being active - each week I spend several evenings at the gym doing Zumba classes - my favorite classes to take! I have one child, my 31-year-old daughter Rachel, who graduated from Westview High School in 2011 and now resides in Los Angeles, California. She is my everything and I visit her as often as I can.
As the new school year approaches, it's important to be prepared for getting back into the swing of school. Here are a few tips to help your West TV student get ready for a successful school year:
- Establish routines: Help your student set a regular sleep schedule a few days before school begins by having them go to sleep and wake up at the same times they will need to go to sleep and wake up on a school day. Read for at least 20 minutes a day to be a step ahead.
- Make a plan for getting to school on time every day. Community building happens first thing in the morning. Be sure to arrive at school by 7:45am so your student feels that sense of belonging with their class.
- Ensure your student is getting plenty of sleep in order to be focused and engaged at school. At bedtime be sure to lock up all devices your student enjoys - including cell phones, apple watches, iPads and laptops. You'd be surprised how many older students admit to staying up late watching YouTube and TikTok videos.
West TV is a wonderful learning community, with committed and highly qualified staff. At West TV students are exposed to a rich and rigorous curriculum. In addition to academic learning, the staff at West TV are committed to fostering an environment that creates responsible citizens in our school and community.
Please take time to read all of the information in this newsletter. There are important updates for the coming school year. We also are in need of volunteers to help with the Back-to-School Picnic next week on Thursday, August 22nd (5:30-7:00pm).
The staff and I are looking forward to a wonderful school year!
Scarlet Valentine
Principal
New This Year
- The school day for students is 7:45am to 2:20pm.
- Breakfast and Lunch is free this year for all students in the Beaverton School District.
- PTC meetings this year will be during the school day starting at 7:50am. The meetings will be held once a month starting in September. A reminder is sent each month by the PTC.
- All volunteers must submit a new volunteer application and pass a background check in the district's new volunteer system 'Raptor'. If you are interested in volunteering at the school in any capacity or want to watch events like the All Star Dash, be sure to complete the BSD Background Check. This process can take up to 6 weeks.
My Child's Teacher
Meet Your Teacher/Drop off School Supplies - Thursday 8/22 (5:30-6:00pm)
Come meet your new teacher, drop off school supplies and take a self-guided tour of the school.
Back-to-School Picnic - Thursday 8/22 (5:30-7:00pm)
Our wonderful PTC hosts this fun event for families which has been a tradition at West TV for more than 40 years. All food is provided. Bring your blanket, lawn chairs, and enjoy time getting to know other families in our West TV Community.
Urgent volunteer need: Back-to-School Picnic volunteers!
We need about 15-18 volunteers to help with set-up, food service, and clean-up for this event. Shifts are short so you can still enjoy the event. As the Raptor volunteer portal may not be completely ready for use before this event, we need any available volunteers (who have been cleared by Raptor) to contact the volunteer coordinators directly (volunteer@wtvptc.org) if able to help.
General Information
First Day of School
Students in grades 1 through 5 will begin on Monday, August 26.
Please note: the first day of school for Kindergarten students is not the same day as students in grades 1 through 5. Kindergarten students do not come to school August 28 & 29.
August 28 - First day of school for Kindergarten students (last name starting with the letter A-L)
August 29 - First day of school for Kindergarten students (last name starting with the letter M-Z)
August 30 - First day of school for all Kindergarten students together
School start/end time
The school day begins at 7:45am and ends at 2:20pm.
Do families need to buy school supplies?
Yes; however, if any of the supplies cannot be purchased, the school will provide them. You will find the school supply list here . If you purchased a school supply kit last spring, the kits have arrived and will be in your child's classroom.
What will students need to bring to school on their first day?
Students should bring a coat or jacket, water bottle, backpack, snack and lunch (if needed). Please make sure to label your students items with their name on it. This will help us when items end up in the Lost & Found.
Student arrival time
Students can arrive anytime between 7:30-7:45am (for safety reasons students are not allowed to arrive before 7:30am as there will be no adult supervision). Students arriving after 7:40am will go directly to class through the cafeteria.
Students in grades 1-5 that arrive between 7:30-7:40am will be supervised outside (on nice weather days they will walk the track and on rainy days they will walk under the covered area) until the bell rings at 7:40am. Students in Kindergarten that arrive between 7:30-7:40am will be supervised in the cafeteria (2 tables are reserved for only Kindergarten students) or they can walk outside with the older students if they would like to.
All students having breakfast can go into the cafeteria at 7:30am.
Drop Off/Pick Up
Student Arrival - Morning Drop Off
All cars and buses will drop off ONLY in the right lane.
Our goal is to get cars in and out of the car drop off lane as quickly as possible since both cars and buses will be using the same lane to drop off students.
If you need to assist your child in any way with getting out of the car, please do not use the car drop off lane - instead we ask that you pull into a parking space in the lower parking lot and walk your child over to the flag pole and say goodbye.
If the car drop off line is too long, feel free to park and walk your student to the flagpole.
Student Dismissal - After School Pick Up
Students will be dismissed at 2:20pm.
Students that ride a bus will go directly to the bus
Parents that walk to the school will wait next to the big tree that is just behind the flagpole with the benches underneath (between the school and playground)
Parents that drive to school to pick up their student will get in the left lane and pull up to the gym doors underneath the breezeway - students will be supervised outside the gym. Drivers are asked to place a paper in driver's side window with the names of student(s) and classroom teacher to assist the staff when assisting students to their vehicle - here’s a template you can use: template)
How do families find out about bus routes?
If a student qualifies for busing, families will receive a message from Transportation with their student’s route information via ParentSquare. Elementary students who live more than one mile from school qualify for busing.
Students are expected to be at their bus at least five minutes early until our drivers learn their routes. Don’t worry if the bus is late for pick-up and drop-off during the first week of school. Please note, bus drivers do not wait for an adult to be present at the afternoon bus stop.
Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast and lunch are served beginning the first day of school. Breakfast and Lunch is free for all students in the district. Students may arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria at 7:30am and directly enter at the cafeteria doors. Staff will direct them to their classroom after eating.
How are food allergies handled?
If your student has any food allergies, please make sure you have filled this information when you review/update your student’s online enrollment verification in ParentVue - see district email sent to all BSD families in July. If you need help or have any questions, please call the school office (503) 356-2510.
Enrollment Verification
Enrollment verification is all online. Please go into ParentVue and take the opportunity to update important family information, give technology permissions, and acknowledge reading important school and District information. Follow this link for information about enrollment verification to verify your child(rens) enrollment. If you have any difficulty, please contact the school office.
Beaverton School District Student/Family Handbook and West TV Family Handbook
The District expects families to read the BSD Student & Family Handbook. West TV has an additional handbook - the West TV Family Handbook. Please read both handbooks thoroughly so you and your child understand BSD and West TV expectations. The handbooks can be found on our school website.
Most policies and procedures in the handbooks are developed to enhance opportunities for learning, or to keep our school a safe place for all students and staff. The District requires that we have each family acknowledge that they have received, read, and discussed the Student/Family Handbook with their children.
West TV PTC (Parent Teacher Club)
The West TV PTC (Parent Teacher Club) is comprised of West TV parents/guardians who volunteer their time to organize opportunities for families to connect and also fundraise for programs and extra curricular activities for students and to provide support for the needs of teachers and the school. The PTC Board meets once each month in the morning and all parents/guardians are welcome to attend the meetings. PTC information will be emailed to you every week throughout the school year on Mondays in the "Monday Minute".
Please consider donating your time, energy, and ideas for West TV and the PTC. There are currently several positions open and these programs can’t be provided without volunteer support. Go to the PTC Website to see a list of open positions.
West TV All Star News, PTC Newsletter & Beaverton School District News
In an effort to reduce the amount of paper used for communication, most of the information shared by the school, the PTC, and District will be through email and the school and district websites.
The school newsletter (All Star News) and PTC Newsletter (Monday Minute) are emailed to you. Emails will include school and PTC flyers, community flyers, and other helpful resources and information.
Parking Lot Safety
Our school has a very small and busy parking lot. Students who walk to school or ride bikes are asked to be extremely cautious. It is important for students to remember to watch the crossing guard at the crosswalk and obey the stop signs. A crossing guard will lead students across Leahy Rd and in the parking lot. The routine is reversed for walking home.
School Calendar
The West TV school events calendar can be found below, on ParentSquare and also on the West TV school website. This calendar has our most current events and is updated on a regular basis.
Volunteering
Please volunteer at West TV! There are many activities and programs that you can support by volunteering. If you are interested in helping out, please respond to PTC requests for help. A background check is required for all volunteers for all Beaverton schools. Please visit the District website and click on Community and Volunteer. It can take several weeks to get on the approved volunteer list at the beginning of the year, so please complete the background check as soon as possible.
All volunteers must be registered in our volunteer management system and complete a criminal background check.
For more back-to-school information, visit the district’s website.
Important Information Regarding Absence Reporting & Changes in Going Home Plans
THIS INFORMATION HAS NOT CHANGED FROM LAST SCHOOL YEAR
In order to ensure that absences are reported correctly and that all staff are aware of where students are expected to go at the end of each day, please read all of the information below.
Absence Reporting
Report all student absences directly to the office this year (please do not email your child’s teacher to report an absence). You can use one of 3 ways to report an absence, including a new school website feature that is quick and easy to use.
Option 1: Call the main office at 503-356-2510 and press 1 to leave a voicemail message.
- Option 2: Submit the absence in ParentVue before 7:45am (it will not accept it after 7:45am).
Option 3: Submit the absence on the West TV school website.
Reporting an absence on the West TV Website:
If you scroll to the bottom of the screen on the West TV website, you will see the option to click on “Report an Absence”. Please fill out all required boxes and submit. It will automatically send the absence notification to the office. As always, please include a note with the reason for the absence. If your student is ill, please include their symptoms. As stated above, we’re asking that parents no longer report student absences directly to their child’s teacher. Teachers are unable to excuse student absences, only the office is able to do so.
Going Home Plan Changes
Report all going home plan changes only to the office (please do not email your child’s teacher with a change in going home plans). The information will be forwarded to teachers by the office staff. We strongly encourage parents to keep their student’s going home plan changes as consistent as possible throughout the year.
Option 1: Submit a request to change your student’s going home plans by going to the West TV school website. See below for more information.
Option 2: Call the school office; however, if you do not speak to someone in the office directly, please don’t leave a message and call again later.
Reporting going home plan changes on the West TV Website:
This is located next to the Absence Reporting option at the bottom of the West TV website. You will fill out all required information and submit. If there is anything that the office needs to know, for example, the name of the person picking up your student or the name of the daycare they attend, please include those details in the note box. Please submit the change to the office as early in the day as possible.

A Message from our School Nurse
If your child has a medication to be stored in the school health room, a parent or guardian must drop it off at the school office (please do not send it to school with your child). The medication must be in the original packaging/prescription bottle with your child's name on it.
A medication authorization form MUST be completed, signed by a parent or guardian, and brought to the school office in all medication situations. Non-prescription medication (e.g., cough drops, aspirin) also must have a medication form filled out and signed by a parent. Students may not self administer nor carry medication.
You can drop off medication at anytime. The office is open daily 7:00-3:30pm.
