Leading the team was Caleb Fynewever (gr 11, primary driver), Kevin Nguyen (gr 11, secondary driver), Max Swanson (gr 10, human player), Afomia Mesfin (gr 11, technician), Isaac Johnson (gr 12, pit crew lead), and Francis Trombley (gr 10, pit crew member). The team was 6th seeded alliance’s first pick, joining 1114 Simbotics (Ontario, Canada), 1701 RoboCubs (Detroit, MI), and 839 Rosie Robotics (Feeding Hills, MA). In the playoffs, the team finished third in their division. Afomia Mesfin was also recognized as a Dean’s List Finalist, honoring students who are outstanding and dedicated leaders in STEM.
LACROSSE RESULTS
It’s been a busy week for Boys Lacrosse since the last Irondale newsletter last Wednesday. Four games in seven days with three wins in those four games. After a two year absence, the native
lacrosse stick, a traveling trophy between Irondale and Mounds View, is back in the hands of the Knights. The stick, whose tradition started in 2022, was the prize for the Knights emotional 10-5 win last Thursday night at Mounds View High School. Senior Captain Noah Burkhart accepted the trophy’s return from Mounds View Senior Jamison Barrows at midfield after the game and the celebration ensued, including a team picture in front of the Mustang statue. As for the game, it was a tale of two halves. The first half looked much the same as the past two years’ matchups, tightly contested, the teams like mirror images of each other. The Mustangs dominated possession in the first, but the Irondale defense again held strong and held for a 3-3 tie at the half. The second half is where the Knights took over. Again, the defense led the way holding Mounds View to just two more goals for the game and containing the Mustangs top sharpshooter, Cayden Ayshford. Offensively Junior Kingston Vang led the charge with 3 goals at critical times including what amounted to the game winner midway through the 3rd quarter.
Two days later the Knights traveled to Blaine where they battled the Bengals with a back and
fourth game that ended in a 12-10 victory. Both teams held leads of three goals but it was the
Knights who pulled away late and held on.
On Tuesday, the Knights came back home and faced a very good White Bear Lake team in what
became a very forgettable night. The Bears jumped on the Knights early in the first quarter and
led 4-0 after one, before the Knights tried to make a comeback. It was 6-3 with 9 minutes left in
the 3rd quarter when White Bear took over for good. The Bears dominated the second half with
speed, shot making, and mistake free lacrosse on their way to a 15-5 win.
Finally, last night in Roseville in a game that saw light rain or mist throughout, the Knights pushed forward with a sloppy 8-5 win continuing a multi-year streak of victories over the Raiders. With that, Irondale improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the Suburban East Conference.
UP NEXT: The Knights will continue conference play next week with a pair of home games.
Irondale will host top ranked East Ridge on Tuesday April 29, at 7:00 p.m. and on Thursday,
May 1, will celebrate Senior Night against Park of Cottage Grove at 7:00 p.m..
