Dragon Community Newsletter #4
Denn John Middle School 24-25
Together! Always!
Dragon Community,
As we work together to support our children’s education, I want to emphasize the importance of providing structure and consistency at home. These elements play a crucial role in your child’s success both at school and in their overall development.
The Importance of Structure and Consistency:
1. Establishing Routine: A consistent daily routine helps children understand what to expect and when. This predictability provides a sense of security and reduces anxiety, allowing them to focus better on their studies and other activities.
2. Promoting Responsibility: When children have clear expectations and consistent rules at home, they learn to take responsibility for their actions. This sense of responsibility carries over to their behavior and performance at school.
3. Enhancing Time Management: Structured routines teach children valuable time management skills. By having set times for homework, chores, and leisure activities, they learn to prioritize tasks and manage their time effectively.
4. Supporting Academic Success: Consistency in study habits and homework routines reinforces the importance of education. When children know that their parents value and support their learning, they are more likely to take their schoolwork seriously and strive for academic success.
5. Building Positive Behavior: Clear and consistent expectations for behavior help children understand the consequences of their actions. This understanding promotes positive behavior both at home and at school, contributing to a respectful and productive learning environment.
How This Helps the School:
When children experience structure and consistency at home, it positively impacts their behavior and performance at school. They come to school ready to learn, with a clear understanding of expectations and a sense of responsibility. This creates a more focused and harmonious classroom environment, allowing teachers to dedicate more time to instruction and less time to managing behavior.
Remember, it takes a village to raise our future societal members!
DJMS Administration
What's New?!
Parents & Community!
Here is the skinny for this week:
1. HB 1473 states that all exterior doors must remain locked. For this reason, our front administration door is now locked. Our deepest apologies for this inconvenience as we are also adapting to this change. In addition, students will utilize keyless cards when being called to go home or visit the nurse/admin/counselor. These keyless cards are stationed with the teachers and will be checked out accordingly. Note, should a student deliberately tamper or transfer this card to another person knowingly, then serious discipline consequences will be implemented. Please help us reinforce the message that school safety is important, and all students should follow school rules.
There is a possibility of updated doorbell technology potentially coming in October.
2. Car Rider Line- Parents, as an effort to expedite the dismissal process, please move all the way up to the end of the line. Students will now wait towards the end of the car rider line and will not be permitted to walk in the opposite direction to reach your car. This greatly impacts traffic and delays many families. Our goal is to have a safe and quick exit process for your convenience.
3. Laptops-
Parents, we are still waiting to receive the additional laptops. I kindly ask that you remain patient until our approximately 200 computers arrive.
Because we understand this is at no fault to the student, I sent a memo to the staff stating that students without laptops or functioning laptops will not receive any grade penalties. Please allow 48 hours for teachers to make this adjustment to impacted students. The students without laptops will receive paper assignments until the new laptops arrive.
If you have any laptop concerns, you may reach out to Mr. Hernandez.
4. 24-25 Bell Schedule Attached
5. New Front Office Receptionist & Attendance Clerk
Parents, please help me welcome Ms. Sandra Rosero to the Dragon Family! She is our new front office receptionist and attendance clerk. Should you need to submit attendance notes, Ms. Rosero will receive those all year long.
6. 504 & ESE Accommodations
Parents, by now all teachers received student 504 & ESE accommodations. Your ESE point of contact is Ms. Emilye Chasen (RCS). If there are any ESE concerns, please contact Ms. Chasen to help problem solve any ESE related situation.
The school counselors oversee 504 at DJMS. For your reference, below you will find their information:
Aponte, Annette
- 8th Grade
- 7th Grade (Last Names A - M)
Librado, Marlene
- 6th Grade
- 7th Grade (Last Names N - Z)
7. Student IDs
Parents, by now all students should have received their permanent school ID. If not, please ensure your student visits with a school dean during lunch. Note, these IDs are required for the bus access.
8. Nurse Opt-In Services
CLINIC PROCEDURES
Due to the recent passage of Florida Statue 1014.06 (Parents Bill of Rights - Parental Consent for Health Care Services); Parents must now provide affirmative consent for schools to provide health care services to minor students. This means that a service we routinely provided in the past such as rendering ice packs, band aids, or taking a student’s temperature can no longer take place on the school campus without parental consent on file. The district will require parent/guardian consent to allow for the services traditionally provided by school nurses/clinic assistants, including care and treatment for general health services which may include but is not limited to band aids, ice packs, wound coverings, anti-itch cream, etc.
If the school does not have consent on file, parents will be notified that their child came to the clinic requiring care with the expectation that they pick up their child if he/she appears sick, unwell, or needs first aid care.
Please keep in mind the school staff still reserves the right to call 911 and provide emergency care in the event of a serious accident, injury, or illness regardless of if we have parent/guardian consent on file per School Board Policy.
Parents have five Health Services they will need to ‘opt in’ for if they wish their child to receive the Health Service at the students enrolled school. If the parent selects all five Health Services, then the Health Services icon will appear for the student in Focus.
At Home Support
As we transition into the normal school year, the list below is how parents can support our school at home:
1. See Something, Say Something
Parents, we want to teach our students the importance of reporting unsafe situations. Whether it may be student harassment, bullying, safety concerns, or anything uncomfortable, please help us reinforce the message of "see something, say something." Any student may report any activity to a school adult.
2. Parent Portal Sign Up
The best way to know live data of your student's performance is through the parent portal! Here you can see grades, attendance, discipline referrals, teacher notes, and testing information in live time. For your reference, below you will find the attachment to sign up. I highly recommend this for all parents!
3. Bullying & Harassment
DJMS will be a zero-tolerance school for bullying and harassment. With a lot of negative influences hurting student emotions, we will not cultivate an environment where students do not feel safe. Therefore, if a confirmed student investigation shows to be substantiated, the consequence as outlined in the SDOC Code of Conduct will be fully executed. So please help us teach our students that kindness goes a long way. If there are students that your child does not want to associate with, simply ask them to turn the other way and make friends with those who support them in a positive manner. Also, bystanders are not cool. We want to teach our students that it is expected to report inappropriate behavior or misconduct that can hurt a student emotionally. Any school dean, teacher, counselor, or administrator can receive these concerns.
4. Dress Code & Cellphone Policies
Parents for your reference, attached you will find our dress code & cellphone policy that is strictly enforced.
5. Positive & Appropriate Behavior Recognition
Parents! Our future PBIS events are scheduled and in the middle of planning. Due to the nature of these events happening during school hours, there will be strict Standards of Participation for related event. Some guidelines include attendance, discipline referrals, tardies, and grades. If the students do not meet the Standards of Participation for a related event, then they will not be able to participate in some school events. So please, help us encourage positive behavior and doing the right thing!

Testing
Parents! PM 1 Testing Season is here.
Testing will be on September 5 ELA and September 6 Math.
This is a whole school shutdown so movement is limited throughout the day and the bells will be off all day until all testing is over. We will do a test run on Tuesday. A test run is when all tests go to their testing location. This avoids any confusion on testing day, and we can begin testing as quickly as possible.
Parents, it is critical you your student is present at school! We are required to have a 95% completion rate for all of our students. This is also important because we will receive our first round of data collection to help us design our instructional plans. This is how we try to close the achievement gap and ensure your student is reaching the proficiency levels on the state tests.
Did you know motivation and strong confidence is the number one factor in great performance? Help us encourage your students that they got this! They are incredibly smart and hard-working.
PBIS
Dragon Dollars is a fast and simple to recognize a student for complying with the basic rules of conduct. It takes the concept of “Observe and Praise Appropriate Behavioral Actions” and extends it by making it easy to award points to students for positive behaviors. Students can then redeem their accumulated dragon dollars in the school store for tangible and intangible rewards. Also, we host school events on Fridays where students use Dragons Dollars to participate. Think of it as a student cash for their PBIS points. This also includes Pep Rallies, School Dances, and much more!
The Denn John Middle School Dragons breathe F.I.R.E., which stands for Focus, Integrity, Respect, and Engaged in Learning. Our goal is to provide a learning environment that promotes both academic and social growth.
Please see the list below of the upcoming events!
