Summer is Coming! Continue to READ!!!
Please encourage your child to read AT LEAST 20 minutes per day to maintain their reading skills over the summer to avoid the all-too-common SUMMER SLIDE and “Brain Drain”! This summer slide is NO FUN! It is when children lose their progress in reading (and other subjects) and return to school in the fall BELOW GRADE LEVEL!
Share what you are reading, read to your child(ren) and discuss books thoroughly. Ask your child questions like, “What was the problem? What was the solution? What was their favorite part?” Read in the car, on a trip, in a tree, on the beach, in the sun, in the shade, in your bed, on the couch, just read, read, read, read!
Reading for only 20 minutes each day can keep your child at or above grade level. Keep track with the St. Louis County Library’s Summer Reading Program (A representative came to visit us in the library on Monday, May 13th. Thank you, Mrs. Stilts!) Ask your child about fun prizes the County Library will be giving away to summer readers!
