The Connection Week 5 Term 3
Huapai District School 25th August 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
“The hardest part of raising a child is teaching them how to ride bicycles. A shaky child on a bicycle for the first time needs both support and freedom. The realisation that this is what the child will always need can hit hard.” - Sloan Wilson.
I’ve recently taken up a new sport - golf. Well, let's just say, I’ve taken up a new sport of hitting a golf ball with a club. I’m loving it and it is something I can do with my boys. Taking them to the driving range has been a big lesson of knowing when to support them in learning a new skill, and when to give them freedom to just play in order to be successful.
As I watched the boys swing and miss, I tried telling them what they needed to do. This did not go down well at all and the frustration grew for both myself and the boys. Mr. 10 made the comment, “Mum, don’t tell me what to do… you don’t even know what you are doing yourself!” And he was right.
I stopped the advice and enabled them the freedom to just hit the ball, to get the feeling of the clubs and their body position, while having fun. And then it happened… when given the freedom, the boys later gave me the opportunity to support with the advice and little knowledge I actually had, and then they flew!
I could say it was all about my amazing coaching skills, but in all reality, it was about the support and freedom they were given to learn at their own pace, and the realisation that I needed to allow that.
So next time there is a new skill your child wants to learn, see what happens when you give them the freedom and support to be ‘shaky’ like the first time on a bicycle. They have more grit, resilience and tenacity that we will ever know if given the opportunity.

Amreen (year 0) says:

Math-A-Thon
We would like to thank you for your efforts supporting your children with their recent Math-a-thon. It was great to see the children sharing that “Mum helped me with my maths” or “Pop and I had a maths quiz and I bet him!”
It’s now time to tidy up the sponsorship side of things. Please return your fundraising money / donations as soon as possible. This should be returned to the school office or finalised using the Give - a - little page linked below.
