October 13: “Respect: Being in ‘Right Relation’ with one Another,” Sermon II in the 2024 UCN
Year-Long Sermon Series “The Five Smooth Stones of Religious Liberalism,” Rev. Scott W. Alexander
Scott Writes: On this Sunday, I continue my 5-part sermon series with a sermon on what Unitarian Universalist theologian Dr. James Luther Adams regards as the second essential “pillar” of our liberal faith tradition…Respect for one another. This is sometimes more complicated than even we religious liberals sometimes like to think.
October 20: “Celebration (and Blessing) of the Animals,” Rev. Alexander and Julie Konik
A Special Service downstairs in the Fellowship Hall…Please bring your well-behaved pet, or a photo or memento of an animal that has meant something important to you in your life.
On this Sunday, Rev. Alexander and Julie Konik will conduct an intergenerational/ interactive/participatory service in “Celebration (and blessing) of the Animals” downstairs in the fellowship hall. This service will provide us time to reflect on our kinship and connection with (and duty towards) the many different animals (whether domesticated or wild) in our lives. Both Rev. Alexander and Julie Konik will share brief reflections on the “kinship” that is possible between us and the animal kingdom…do be with us on this fun Sunday.
Saying Farewell
Help us Send Britney off to Los Angeles with our Love and an "Appreciation Purse"
While we are so sad to see Britany leave us at the end of October as she and her husband pursue professional opportunities in California, we rejoice with her on this exciting life transition. Britney has faithfully been with us for 6 years, she has so greatly enhanced our worship with her musical talents, and we want to send her on her way now with an "appreciation purse" that we gather from grateful members and friends.
Checks can be sent to UCN with "Britney appreciation" in the memo line...or you can contribute online. Go to https://ucnorth.breezechms.com/give/online
And on the first line where it asks "give to," scroll down to "Britney's Going Away."
We will be presenting Britney with her gift at the Oct. 27 service.
Hurricane Relief
In compassionate response to the devastation across North Carolina caused by Hurricane Helene, UCN held a special collection that will be sent to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Asheville. There are other UU churches in North Carolina that have also been impacted by the storm, as well as yet another hurricane that hit Florida hard this week. If you would like to help our southern neighbors recover from the damage, here are a few options:
UUA Disaster Relief Fund: https://www.uua.org/giving/disaster-relief-page
American Red Cross: www.redcross.org
Salvation Army: give.salvationarmyusa.org
You're invited...
to the Launch Party for our Capital Campaign to eliminate our church mortgage and strengthen our reserve funds.

Election Ballot Update
Wisconsin voters will be asked one question to amend (change) the constitution on their November ballot. While at a glance it seems reasonable, the League of Women Voters has determined it is not. This constitutional amendment change from "every" to "only" is a downgrade to all of our voting rights.
❌Question: “Eligibility to vote. Shall section 1 of article III of the constitution, which deals with suffrage, be amended to provide that ❗only❗ a United States citizen age 18 or older who resides in an election district may vote in an election for national, state, or local office or at a statewide or local referendum?"
- “Every U.S. citizen” is protective. The rights of at least those individuals – U.S. citizens over 18 who reside in the district for 28 days – cannot be denied.
- “Only U.S. citizens” is limiting. Instead of guaranteeing anyone’s rights, it denies the right to vote to anyone outside that group.
This is how we can lose rights such as our freedom to vote.
If there was no meaningful difference between “only” & “every,” legislators would not bother trying to pass this as a constitutional amendment.
“If the constitution says 'only' citizens can vote, that means that sub-sets of citizens could be excluded – like citizens that don't have documents to prove their citizenship. If the constitution says "every" citizen it means that it's a guarantee.” – Eileen Newcomer, LWVWI Voter Education Manager
Please vote NO on this question.

LGBTQ+ Film Screening Oct. 15 by the Germantown Community Coalition.
Did you know there are over 35,000 mothers—many from Christian backgrounds—who are willing to risk the loss of friends, family, and their faith communities to keep their LGBTQ+ kids safe? Connected by private Facebook groups, they help each other overcome the teachings of their churches and call themselves “mama bears” because they fight ferociously for the civil rights of the entire LGBTQ+ community. The Mama Bears documentary, a film by Daresha Kyi, celebrates a few of their stories.
In partnership with a number of other community nonprofits, we are thrilled to announce our upcoming FREE screening of Mama Bears on October 15th at 6:30pm at the Germantown High School Performing Arts Center (W180N11501 River Lane, Germantown). Following the film presentation, there will be a discussion panel featuring local faith leaders, advocates, and families to examine the importance of the film. As the LGBTQ+ community continues to come under attack, we want to bring people together in the spirit of learning and growing in order to be a more welcoming place for all. In addition, there will be two LGBT history exhibits on display (https://vince.lgbt/)
Advanced registration is required. For more details and to register, please visit the events page on our website: germantowncommunitycoalition.org/events.

Need Stuff?
The RE team is busy getting our classrooms cleaned out, cleaned up and refreshed for our growing RE program and miscellaneous meetings/events held here at the church. As various Adopt a Room volunteers have worked on different spaces throughout the church, some things have been temporarily stored in the Senior Youth Room. Our intent has been to Reuse and Recycle as best we could. Now it’s time for things to leave the building. If interested, please take a look in the Youth Room to see if there’s anything you’d like to take with you. What’s left by Sunday, October 13 will be hauled out to make way for the new.
Please Note
If you are discarding furniture to the dumpster area, please do not put it in the dumpster. Please place the furniture either inside the fenced area or on the east side of the fence on the concrete pad. When the dumpster becomes full of furniture, there is no place for regular trash to be stored and must be left outside the dumpster itself. This gives those four-legged critters an invitation to rip open the plastic bags and spread trash everywhere. Thank you for your support.
Community Conversations
Join us October 15 at 6:30 pm in the UCN Sanctuary for education, awareness and prevention on substance use and mental health. You will hear from Tina Perry, the founder of the non-profit organization Just Listen based in Mequon, as well as Marybeth (a Parent Peer Support Specialist), our Ozaukee County Sheriff and Bev, who will be sharing about Wisconsin Quilts. Narcan training will also be available. Just Listen has served people in our community since 2011, helping individuals and families. More information at just-listen.org.

Couples, singles, men & women are all welcome, long-term commitment or not. Each month, a different member of the group takes the responsibility of choosing a restaurant at which to meet and eat, and emails the rest of the group with the particulars as to what and where, requesting yay or nay from the emailed recipient, so that reservations can be made if required. Join us! Email brendaberg@spectrum.net
