Updates From The Principal
Hello NRMS Families,
There are many indicators that our school climate and culture continues to improve as compared to last year. Thanks to our strong partnership with you, the parent/guardian community, we have experienced a great first two months of the school year. There are some small, noticeable indicators that taken together are indicative of the positive shifts in our school. At drop off in the morning, students are arriving on time and are politely saying "good morning" as they see me or our school resource officer. Last year, we had too many late arriving students and a greeting was not as common. Additionally, we have noticed students saying "please" and "thank you" and an overall increase in professional, polite interactions when interacting with adults in the school and with our administrative staff in the office. While vaping continues to be an area of concern, we have had significantly fewer incidents of vaping in school then we had last year. All of these updates are positive signs. Our students are taking school seriously. Respect and kindness are ruling the day. Middle school is a time when students may make poor choices. Our students are receiving the feedback and learning from these mistakes. We are proud of how far our students have come and we will continue to work on maintaining this positive learning environment.
Last week, some of our 7th grade cross-country team members exhibited the best qualities of our student body. A few of the runners encountered an elderly woman who had fallen, was injured and disoriented while they were on a training run. Our students stopped and assisted the woman. A gentleman was driving by and noticed our students huddled around the woman. He stopped, assisted, and called 911. Both the good samaritan and the responding EMT commented at how impressed they were with our students. He called me and shared this story with me the next morning. He could not say enough positive accolades about how our students remained calm, did the right thing, and it gave him hope for the future. He then stopped by and dropped off gift cards to the Hot Chocolate Sparrow for each of the students. We then recognized these heroes among us at a 7th grade meeting in our cafeteria. I notified the parents of the students who assisted. I am proud of our students and it is wonderful to know that we are all looking out for one another here at NRMS.
Earlier this week, our 7th grade students traveled to the dunes in Truro on a field trip. The hike is not easy in the soft sand. Our students had an amazing experience. It is important for us to showcase for our students the wondrous beauty of the place where we all live. Our hope is that field trip experiences like this coupled with the lessons in our curriculum will inspire students to proactively work toward implementing conservation and preservation of this special place. To that end, our cafeteria composting program has started. It is totally student-inspired and student-led.
Good stuff happening all around NRMS.
The 8th graders will be traveling to Boston in June for an overnight trip. Fundraising information and trip details will be shared with students and families soon. In order for this exciting educational experience to take place we need 130 or more of our 8th graders to register for the trip. We hope that all of our 8th graders will participate. Scholarships will be available, so please do not let the cost of the trip be a barrier to participation.
Please consider helping out with the upcoming dinner for teachers during conferences, working at the Craft Fair, making a donation to offset the cost of field trips, or joining the PTO. There are many ways for you to support our students and our school.
Parent-Student-Teacher conferences are next week. Wednesday is a half day of school for students. Halloween is next Thursday. Student costumes are allowed, but please no masks or weapons.
Enjoy the weekend.

Wednesday, October 30, 2024 from 12:30pm - 3:30pm

We also encourage you to schedule a time to meet with your child's World Language (French and Spanish) and Exploratory Teachers (Technology; Art; Music; P.E.; Health; Greenhouse; Adventure Ed; Library/Media; Boost). In addition, we recommend that your student join the conference with you and the teacher.
