Welcome To Week #29
Diamond Bar High School and the Walnut Valley Unified School District are proud to recognize Women's History Month as we continue to provide our organization with resources to celebrate diversity while building equitable and inclusive practices for our community.
Dear Brahma Family,
Last year, Diamond Bar High School hosted a Cyber Safety Cop Assembly to educate our students about the challenges and risks of the online world. Led by a law enforcement officer, this powerful presentation covered critical topics such as:
- The dangers of sharing personal information with strangers
- Consequences of mean, rude, or threatening messages
- Anti-bullying strategies and common online safety concerns
- Online sexual exploitation, criminal harassment, and threats
- Practical steps to enhance security on social media
- How to build and maintain a positive online reputation
Students learned some important lessons like:
- Your posts last forever: Anything shared online can be stored, forwarded, or shared indefinitely.
- Reputation matters: Employers and colleges often review applicants’ digital presence.
- Online choices have emotional and social consequences: Poor decisions can lead to bullying, blackmail, or damaged relationships.
- What happens online doesn’t stay online: Many disciplinary issues at school stem from things students say or do online, even outside of school hours.
That same evening, we held a 90-minute, parent-only seminar based on the book Parenting in the Digital World. This session provided parents with essential strategies to:
- Monitor their child's social media use effectively
- Protect them from online threats and exploitation
- Restore a healthy balance of technology at home
Parents were also given some practical tips like:
- Monitor and discuss privacy settings on social media.
- Encourage critical thinking about the long-term impact of online actions.
- Lead by example with a respectful and responsible online presence.
- Have regular check-ins with your child. Make online safety an ongoing conversation.
- Promote digital detoxes at home. Encourage screen-free time to develop healthier habits.
- Help build resilience by teaching teens how to handle online challenges and interactions.
And everyone—students, parents, and staff—left with some key takeaways that day including:
- Your Digital Footprint is Permanent: Every action online leaves a lasting mark.
- Once Shared, Always Shared: Even deleted content can be saved, forwarded, or resurfaced.
- Online Decisions Have Real-World Consequences: Poor choices can impact college admissions, job opportunities, and personal relationships.
- Online Behavior Has School Consequences: A significant number of disciplinary actions at school stem from students’ online behavior. Cyberbullying, harassment, and inappropriate content don’t just cause harm—they can also lead to real consequences at school.
If you were unable to attend these presentations, there is information on cyber safety available online, as well as at cybersafetycop.com.
While technology is an incredible tool, it also requires responsibility. By fostering open communication, setting clear expectations, and staying informed, we can help our students make smart choices and stay safe in today’s digital world.
If you have any concerns about your child's safety, whether online or offline, please don’t hesitate to reach out to their GLC. Let’s continue working together to empower our children with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the digital world wisely!
Have a wonderful week!
Sincerely,
David Hong
